Obituary of Margaret Elizabeth Black
Black, Margaret Elizabeth (Howard)- With great sadness, but with recognition of a life well lived, the family of Margaret Elizabeth Black announce that she passed away peacefully in her 108th year at her residence, the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home, on January 11, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Margaret was born on October 11, 1909 to the late William J. and Eliza A. (Humphrey) Howard. She was predeceased by 2 sisters and 6 brothers, as well as her husband, Roy C. Black (1995) and daughter, Carole Ann (Black) Laird (2010). Marg was a full time homemaker who loved her home, and filled it with amazing crafts such as tole paintings and hand knitted or crocheted items. She will long be remembered for her cooking skills, especially her doughnuts and tea biscuits. She had been a long time member of the I.O.D.E., and an adherent of Main Street Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school. She enjoyed many summers at the family cottage at Carter's Point on the Saint John River. Margaret is survived by her son and daughter- in- law, Dave and Faye Black, and their daughters, Patricia ( Ken Lerette ),her son Andrew of Perth, Australia; Dale, and her sons Nicholas and Nathan Devost ; Heather (Black) Collins ( Dave ) , all of Saint John, and Son Greg of Ottawa. She is also survived by grandchildren Diane (Laird) McCloskey (Mike); Heather Laird; Colleen (Laird) Lundholm (Paul); and Steven (Stefanie) Laird and twelve great grand-children, nine of whom reside in the United States. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the friendly and caring staff at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Nursing Home for the compassionate care shown to Margaret during her 3 year residence there. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424), with visitation on Saturday, January 14, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm, and from 1-2 pm on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at which time the funeral service will be held. A reception will be held immediately following the service at Brenan's Reception Center. A private family service of internment will be held at a later time in the spring. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to RiverCross Church, Canadian Cancer Society, the Arthritis Society, or a charity of the donor’s choice. www.brenansfh.com.
