Obituary of Richard Gerard Scott
It is with appreciation for a life well-lived that the family of Dick Scott announces his passing, which occurred on Sunday, December 24, 2017 at Bobby’s Hospice at the age of 80 surrounded by those he loved. Born in Halifax, NS on December 14, 1937, he was a son of the late Walter and Alma (Butler) Scott. Dick’s early education began at St. Peter’s Boys’ School, followed by St. Mary’s preparatory college in Brockville, ON. He graduated from St. Malachy’s High School in Saint John in 1957. He was educated at St. Mary’s, Wilfrid Laurier and Waterloo Universities. He trained with the Canadian Public Relations Society (CPRS). Pursuing a passion and talent for singing, Dick received private professional vocal training as a baritone and sang in many top-level productions, especially in Kitchener, ON. After working nearly 34 years with Kitchener’s Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology, Dick retired and returned to Saint John. During his dedicated career as a professor in the Journalism, Print and Broadcast program, he taught and helped train many successful journalists. His personal media experience includes radio, television, newspaper and public relations. He was honoured to be affiliated with the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada – Officer’s Mess in Cambridge, ON; the Wilfrid Laurier Alumni Association in Waterloo, ON. He was a member of the faculty association of Conestoga College of Applied Arts and Technology, Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. Dick will be missed by his loving wife, Frances A. (Morris) Clements "Fran"; his children, Heather Dahmer (Scott) of Conestoga, ON, Terri Whitton (Randy) of Waterloo, ON and Richard Scott (Izumi) of Ottawa, ON; grandchildren, Jacqueline Boulding, Taisei and Ryoma Scott; a beloved sister, Lorna Reid (William) of St. Catharines, ON; several cousins; a niece and nephew; as well as all those whose lives he touched in his lifetime. Dick was predeceased by his brother Robert in 2008. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) with visitation on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 4:00 -8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Pius X Church, 316 Somerset Street on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 12:00 PM. Interment will take place at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
