Obituary of M. Dorothy Hickey
M. Dorothy (Buckley) Hickey March 4, 1926 ~ January 19, 2017 It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy (Buckley) Hickey on Thursday, January 19, 2017, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. In her final days, she was surrounded by the love of her children and extended family: sharing warm memories, laughter and a few tears. Dorothy, or Dot as she was better known, was born in Saint John on March 4, 1926 – the eldest daughter of the late Frances (O’Brien) and the late Bill Buckley. As a young woman, Dot enjoyed working at Dominion Stores in Saint John – a job that helped support her love of, and flare for, fashion. Her career focus shifted when she met her beloved husband, the late Charles Hickey (1920-1978). After their marriage, Dot became a full-time wife and mother, a role at which she truly excelled. Together, they welcomed eleven children into the world, eight boys and three girls - "the Summerville Hickeys". She was a wonderful mother and mother-in-law, as well as a loving Nanny to her 31 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and to the four more great grandchildren on the way. Her family lived for their gatherings, whether it was at Hickey family reunions or just a Sunday after Church featuring her famous homemade bread. Dot showed her family what it was to love, and be loved. Dot is survived by her eleven children; Suzanne, John (Nancy), Kit (John Higgins), Chuck (Anne), Mike (Linda Urquhart), Bill (Wendy Williston), Dick (Maureen), Jim (Jackie Wood), Frank (Christine), Tim (Kelly Hare), and Margie; her sisters Ann Marie Murray, Mary Chamberlain, and Jean Zmboukis, and her brother Pat Buckley. Besides her husband and parents Dot was predeceased by her sisters Lillian Hickey and Theresa McCaffrey, brother Bill Buckley, and grandson Thomas Hickey. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her family and many friends. The family greatly appreciates the support and kindness of family and friends, especially for the many notes, visits and gifts received. We would also like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit for their dedication and exceptional kindness shown to Mum and to our family. Visitation will be held at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424) from 2-8 PM on Saturday, January 21 and Sunday, January 22, 2017. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St Peter's Catholic Church, 50 Clarendon Street on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 11:00 AM with the interment to follow at St Bridget's Church in Chapel Grove. Should friends desire, contributions in lieu of flowers, may be made to St Bridget's Church, Safe Harbour or to a charity of choice.
