Obituary of Joan Eunice McCumber

It is with appreciation for a long and well-lived life that the family of Joan Eunice McCumber, loving wife of the late Alva Mitchell White McCumber, announce her passing which occurred on Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at the Saint John Regional Hospital.  Born on September 28, 1927 in Saint John, she was the daughter of the late Capt. Donald and Edith (White) Taylor.

In her earlier years, Joan was employed as a teacher.  This was a career she was truly proud of and loved.  She kept her own children’s feet warm wearing her beautiful hand-knit socks.  When offering treats she often said, “Take two, one for each hand.”  She was sharp at cards and sharp of mind.  She will be fondly remembered for her slight obsession and love of watermelons.  In her later years, she ate the fruit daily and watermelon décor could be found throughout her Manawagonish Road home. 

Joan will be lovingly remembered by her children, John (Wendy) of Saint John, Lavonne (Henry) of Cambridge, Ontario, Eric (Kim) of Long Reach, Lea (Deborah) of Saint John and Dawn of Saint John; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephew and her honourary daughter, Cindy Ferriere (Dale).  In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Harrison and his wife, Judy.

Joan’s family would like to thank the staff of Assessments Plus for helping her stay in the comfort of her home, the Whipple family for the years of love and friendship, and the volunteers and bingo players at the Milford Community Centre for making Thursdays the best day/evening of the week.  The compassion and kindness shown towards Joan will never be forgotten.

A graveside gathering will take place in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery, 1650 Manawagonish Road, Saint John on Monday, October 16, 2023 at 11:00 AM.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424).
