Dorothy was born in Rankin Inlet where she lived with her family on the land until 1948 when they moved to Churchill, Manitoba. They later had moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba where Dorothy had worked at the Hudson Bay Company as a clerk. When Dorothy was living in Churchill, she met Gord Dell and they married in Barrie, Ontario and had their two daughters. They then travelled to Germany with the girls where they lived for 4 years. When she then came back to Canada, they welcomed their son. Dorothy settled with the three children in Pembroke, Ontario where she had worked mostly at the Windsor Tavern as a second cook and cleaner. She had worked in a fruit and vegetable stand in Pembroke as well. Dorothy was a hard worker and a familiar friendly face in her community. When Dorothy finally did retire, she liked to volunteer. She often volunteered at the Pembroke Public Library and the Salvation Army soup kitchen. Her most cherished place to volunteer was at "Got You In Mind", a second-hand clothing shop belonging to her friend Blanche Mirault in Pembroke. Dorothy loved all of her grandchildren and would often travel all across Canada and go on many adventures to other countries with them. Dorothy suffered many health issues over the years with having breast cancer twice and being diagnosed with dementia. Right to the end she never stopped fighting with the love of her family, keeping her going through it all.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7424). At the request of Dorothy there will be no funeral held. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held in Pembroke, Ontario at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to breast cancer research, as well as dementia treatments would be appreciated. The family would like to thank all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital in New Brunswick for their care of our mother. The family would also like to thank the staff at Willow House Loch Lomond Village for the care of our mother prior to her entering the hospital.
