Obituary of John Patrick Magee
The death of Rev. John Patrick Magee, a retired priest of the Diocese of Saint John occurred at his residence in St. Stephen, N.B. on Sunday, October 13, 2002. Father Magee was born in Saint John, NB on January 15, 1917, son of the late William J. and Margaret Eileen (Winslow) Magee. He graduated from St. Vincent's High School in 1934. During the Second World War he served overseas with the Royal Canadian Army. After the war he entered the service of the Federal Government and retired from the Income Tax Department after twenty-seven years service. Father Pat studied for the priesthood at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell, Connecticut and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Saint John in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on May 7, 1981 by the Most Rev. A. J. Gilbert. After ordination he served until 1983 as Associate Pastor of St. Joseph's Parish, Loch Lomond. He was then appointed Pastor of St. Ann's Parish in Kingsclear with its missions of St. Patrick's, Newmarket, St. Mark's, Lake George, Immaculate Conception, Cork and St. Mary's, Hanwell Road. In 1987 he was appointed Pastor of St. Stephen's Parish, Milltown where he served until his retirement in 1993. He continued to live in St. Stephen after his retirement. He is survived by two sisters: Sr. Eleanor Magee, S.C.I.C. and Miss Constance Magee, both of Saint John; one nephew William J. Magee (Ellen) of Fairport, NY; and one niece Helen Jean Cochrane (James) of Ellsworth, Me. He was predeceased by two brothers: Winslow Magee and Donald Magee and three sisters: Margaret Mary Sincennes, Sr. Jean Magee, S.C.I.C. and Sr. Louise Magee, S.C.I.C. Father Magee's body will be resting at the Cathedral Rectory, 91 Waterloo Street, Saint John on Tuesday afternoon, October 15 with visitation from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Tuesday evening the body will be translated to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception at 6:45 pm for Solemn Vespers at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue in the Cathedral until 9:00 pm. Father Magee's Funeral Mass will be concelebrated in the Cathedral on Wednesday, October 16 at 12 noon. Interment will follow in the Priests' Plot of St. Joseph's Cemetery.
