Obituary of Arnold G. Ellis
- Obituary of Arnold's wife Mona - The death of Mr. Arnold G. Ellis, of Chateau de Champlain (300 Boars Head Rd.), Saint John, NB, formerly of Rocky Terrace, husband of the late Mrs. Mona I. (Brown) Ellis occurred at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, November 29, 2002. Born in Maces Bay, NB, February 17,1913, he was the son of the late Joseph and Clara (Mawhinney) Ellis. In his early years, Arnold worked as a fisherman, fox rancher and heavy equipment operator before joining his brother Harvey in the automobile business. He became known throughout the Maritime Provinces as a successful businessman and owner/operator of Ellis Sales and Service Ltd. on Waterloo St. and Mile House Sales Ltd. on Rothesay Ave. both in Saint John. He introduced Volkswagen to the region in 1954 and was the VW distributor for the Maritimes. An avid golfer and curler, Arnold was an active member of Thistle St. Andrew's Curling Club, as well as Riverside, Westfield and Hampton Golf and Country Clubs. Past President of the Maritime Seniors Golf Association, Arnold still found time to volunteer for Meals on Wheels and to travel with Mona, his wife of 58 years. Other interests included his membership in the Sportsman's Club, Bald Lake Fishing Club, Log Cabin Fishing Club, Union Club, and the Maritime Automobile Dealers' Association. Arnold enjoyed Harness Racing and owned several horses in the late 50's. He was a Baptist by faith and attended both the Fundamental Baptist Church and the Church of St. John and St. Stephen. He is survived by his daughter Jean (Robert) Hutt, and his grandchildren; Timothy and Jeffrey all of Fredericton, NB as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife and parents, Arnold is predeceased by one brother, Harvey Ellis and three sisters; Ruth Harris, Ella Stumcke and Roberta Clinton. Resting at Brenans Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424) with visitation on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. only and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. from Brenan's Chapel. Interment at Maces Bay Cemetery later that day. Remembrances may be made to a charity of the donors' choice. www.brenansfh.com
