Obituary of William Joseph Hatfield

It is with deep sadness that the family of William (Bill) Hatfield announce his passing surrounded by family at Bobby’s Hospice on Wednesday June 13, 2018 after a courageous fight with cancer. Bill was born in Saint John and proudly served the NB Liquor Corporation for over 35 years before retiring in 2009.He finished his career as manager of the Parkway location and he took great pride in the store’s presentation as well as customer service. Bill had a very special friendship with Fred Toole (Heather) that lasted for more than 68 years. They were constant companions and he treasured their many outings stateside to either Portland or Bangor; he was able to make one last trip to Calais with his friend only 10 days ago. Theirs was a true friendship in every way and Bill was lucky to have Fred and we know he feels the same. Bill also enjoyed spending time with his second family at the Lower Westside Tim Horton’s location. He could be found here several times every day holding court with his many friends and teasing the staff he very much cared for. It was easy to know when he was there as you could see the red Ford Taurus with the Elvis 2 licence plate out front, and yes he was a true fan of the King as his large collection of records, videos and memorabilia shows. He passed with an Elvis video playing; we believe he was at peace. Lastly, every Sunday for over 30 years Bill and his niece, Mary-Elena, had dinner together. Uncle Bill cooked each meal using his own recipes and his mother’s. They also spent Christmas and Thanksgivings together again with Uncle Bill’s magical cooking abilities. Sadly, Mary-Elena never learned to cook. Bill is survived by niece, Mary-Elena Stack, nephew Gerald Stack (Allyson), grand-niece, Lauren Stack, grand-nephew Joshua Stack; as well as several cousins, including close cousins, Linda, Cathy and Grant and Aunt Margaret Grant. Bill was predeceased by his father William Roland Hatfield, His mother Mary Francis and his sister, Jean Grace (Stack). Bill will be truly missed by his many friends and family. A special thank you to the caring staff of Bobby’s Hospice. Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506) 634-7424. In keeping with Bill’s wishes there will be no visitation. A private service will be held at a later date. For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
