Obituary of James Oliver Salmon
James "Jim" Salmon, 90, peacefully died August 18, 2018, at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home, Saint John, NB. Jim is survived by his two children, Leslie Johnston (Patrick) of Bedford, NS and Larry Salmon (Luan) of Saint John, NB; his sister, Pauline Duff (Bill) of Sussex and his four grandchildren, Vicky and Becca Johnston and Zoë and Zachary Salmon. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Jean, his brother, Arnold and his sister, Hazel.
Jim was born in Debec, NB, June 19, 1928, in a house with no electricity. Jim was a devoted family man. He took his family to Portland United Church every Sunday. Jim’s passion for music led him to being in charge of the church sound system, recording the service every week for those that were unable to make it to church. He enjoyed taking his family on trips, especially PEI and Florida. He shared his love of hunting and fishing with his son, Larry. Jim retired from NBTel after an impressive 45 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed travelling across North America with Jean by his side in their white Cadillac.
In his younger years, Jim enjoyed boxing, hockey and softball. In his later years, he traded his gloves, hockey stick and bat for his new obsession, golf! He was always the first one on the golf course as soon as the sun came up, and took pride in playing over 100 rounds of golf each season, reducing the cost to an impressive $3/round.
Jim was always willing to help out anyone in need. He and Jean regularly volunteered their time at Romero House and he could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.
After his stroke, Jim could often be seen driving around Milledgeville in his electric wheelchair, with his orange flag waving and his trusty camera in his pocket. He loved taking pictures of everyone he knew, but most especially his grandchildren.
Jim was able to enjoy living on his own until the impressive age of 89, however, he could not have done that without the special and loving care from Jennifer Lutes. Jennifer cared for and loved Jim as if he were her own father, for which the family is extremely grateful. Jim lived out the remainder of his time at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home, where he was cared for by exceptional staff.
There will be visitation on Wednesday, August 22, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424). The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 23 at 11:00 am at Portland United Church, 50 Newport Crescent, Saint John, NB.
If you wish to remember Jim, donations to Romero House or a charity of choice would be truly appreciated.
