Obituary of David Franklin Smith

With appreciation of a life well lived, we grieve for the passing of David Franklin Smith, loving husband of 71 years to Doreen C. (Lemmon) Smith, which occurred on Tuesday, February 26, 2019, peacefully at his residence. David is survived by his three children: Barry D. (Fran) Smith, Janice B. (Robert) Chanter and Mark G. (Darlene) Smith, six grandchildren: Kathryn J., Meaghan J., Jason A., Heather A., Andrew T. and Rebecca H., 8 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Right Reverend George (Lois) Lemmon, sister-in-law Elizabeth Smith, as well as cousins, nephews and nieces. David was predeceased by his grandson Ryan T. and brother Beverley G. Smith. After David’s graduation, he served briefly in the RCAF. He later joined Northern Electric (now Northern Telecom) in Saint John, retiring after 37 years. David was a member, and played active roles in many organizations. He was past President of the Telephone Pioneers of America Chapter 51, past President for two terms of "Loyalist" Life Member Club, TPA, past President of the Saint John Naturalist Club, past Treasurer of the NB Federation of Naturalists and former NB representative on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Nature Federation for three consecutive terms and four years as secretary of the Board. David had many hobbies and interests which included camping, canoeing, as well as photography and he was an avid "birder". He was a man of faith, and his family has a long association with St. Luke’s Anglican Church going back to its inception in 1838. David was an active member of the church. He served a term as Warden, also as Vestry Member and for many years on the Audit Committee. He shared his voice as a choir member for over 60 years, and over 40 as a Sunday School Treasurer and Superintendent. David was licensed as a Diocesan Lay-reader, for which he was honoured with emeritus distinction. David’s family would like to express their love and gratitude to Knoll Meahan, David’s homecare worker, whose care and companionship will not be forgotten. Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) where visitation will take place on Wednesday, March 6 from 2-4 and 6-8 and Thursday, March 7 from 11-12 at which time the Funeral Service will begin from Brenan’s Chapel with interment to follow at Fernhill Cemetery.
