Obituary of Gerry Townsend
The death of Gerald “Gerry” Townsend of Saint John, beloved husband of the late Evelyn (McCurdy) Townsend, occurred on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born on July 8, 1935 in Saint John, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Evelyn (Currie) Townsend.
Gerry retired from his management position with NBTel after 35 years of employment. He always took great comfort in his faith and was an active member of Forest Hills Baptist Church. He was especially proud of his time spent serving with the bus ministry and always looked forward to being with his church community. Gerry was a member of the NBTel Pioneers and a previous member of Simonds Lions Club. In his younger years, he was skilled at playing the drums and enjoyed drumming in a pipe band.
Gerry is survived by his sons, Andrew Townsend of Saint John and Mark Townsend (Roxy) of Red Deer, AB; daughter, Krista Creaser (David) of Baxters Corner; grandchildren, Lauren Creaser (Matthew), Amy Creaser, Elliott Townsend and Amanda; daughter-in-law, Nicole Townsend; sister-in-law, Willa Peacock; nephew, Charles Peacock; as well as special friend, Shirley Fairweather.
Gerry’s family would like to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Kristofferson and staff, Dr. Ian Grant, Dr. Andreani and the nurses from Extra-Mural for the excellent care that was always provided to him. To the staff of 5CNorth, Palliative Care and Shoppers Drug Mart Westmorland Road, a heartfelt thank you for the guidance, care and support that was shown to Gerry and his family.
In keeping with Gerry’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424).
For those who wish, remembrances may be made to the New Brunswick Lung Association or SJRH Palliative Care Unit c/o the SJRH Foundation.
