Obituary of Elsie May Hersey

The death of Elsie Hersey of Saint John occurred on Monday, January 13, 2020 at Rocmaura Nursing Home with her niece Edith at her side.  Born on April 8, 1939 at Snider Mountain, NB, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Clara (Fisher) Hersey and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Elsie was employed with the DVA for 25 years and went on to work at the Saint John Regional Hospital for 11 years as a nurse’s aid.  She was a proud northender who was raised on Bridge Street in Indiantown.  Elsie was passionate about travelling and was a skilled bowler who accumulated many bowling trophies over the years.  She truly loved her time spent at Rocmaura, where she especially enjoyed all the musical events and where she was affectionately known as the “dancing queen,” a title of which she was very proud.  Elsie also enjoyed teaching the staff and residents how to dance.  She eagerly looked forward to the visits from the daycare children and always participated in the weekly outings.

Elsie’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the entire staff of Rocmaura for the friendship and exceptional care that was always provided to her.  The kindness, guidance and support shown towards Elsie and her family will never be forgotten.

Elsie is survived by her special nieces and nephews, Edith Chilton (Bill), Diane Hayward (Truman), Carolyn (Bob) Tompkins, Ruth Northeast (Stephen) and Anne Mallory; her godchildren and great-niece and great-nephew, Karen and Richard Chilton; along with many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Ronald Hersey and sisters, Clara Hersey, Margaret Chestnut, Connie Dobson and Sadie Gautreau.

Resting at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) with visiting on Monday, January 20, 2020 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM.  The funeral service will take place from Brenan’s Chapel on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 1:00 PM.  Interment will take place in Fernhill Cemetery.
