Obituary of Amelia Sarah Bernard

With appreciation for a life well-lived, the family of Amelia “Mamie” Bernard, wife of the late Thomas E. Bernard, announces her passing, which occurred on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at the Church of St. John & St. Stephen Home. Born in Saint John on November 3, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Scott and Lillian Elliott.

 

Amelia was a loving and devoted mother and homemaker, and put her whole heart into raising her children to be kind, caring and responsible adults. In the war times, she volunteered as an ambulance driver to take injured soldiers to the hospital or their homes. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion branch 64 for 26 years and volunteered selling poppies and selling tickets for special events. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo with her friends.

 

She will be missed by her children Raymond Bernard (Sally), Debbie Farren (Rick), Heather King (Art), Wayne Bernard (Charlene “Betty”), Cheryl Clark (Ian) and Bryan Bernard; 14 grandchildren;  23 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; sisters Dorothy Hachey, Bertha Westerdyke (Mike) and Jean Roy; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, Amelia was predeceased by a son Jack Bernard.

 

Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). Due to the current public health crisis, Amelia’s celebration of life service will be postponed until a date and time to be announced. Interment will take place privately at Greenwood Cemetery.
