I had the privilege of meeting Father Ray a number of times through my uncle (James Wilson). I vividly recall our visit with Father Ray in Saint John in the mid 1980's and, in particular, the wonderful chowder his housekeeper Mrs Hickey made for us that evening for dinner. Ray was a very kind man who had a great sense of humour and he shared my uncle's love of classical music. I am saddened to hear of his passing but thankful for having known him.

To the family of Father Ray, our deepest and heartfelt condolences on your loss. He was a dear friend of, and co-conspirator with, my mother (Genevieve Hickey), and the colourful raconteur of many tales, stories and anecdotes, some of which which almost true. He was kind enough to travel to Regina to preside over our wedding (36 years ago), and made a special day even more special by his presence and involvement - something that we remember with great fondness to this day. A good and faithful friend, and a wonderful person. Our deepest sympathy.

Fr. Stack was a wonderful human being....kind, good, always interested in the concerns of others.
I knew him when he served as pastor of St Ann's in East saint John. In those years I was one of the parish lectors and I remember with fondness the many conversations I had with Father before and after Mass. He had, I believe, a very well thought out understanding of the Church as a human institution.
My sympathy to his family.

To the family of Father Raymund Joseph Stack:
Father Stack was a most caring, compassionate, and gentle person. Although there are other examples, two occasions especially exemplify that for me.
I am a graduate from the St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1960. Father Stack officiated, spoke, and administered mass at our graduation ceremony. He talked about the roll of nursing in life, and how important our contribution was going to be to the fabric of society. He made me feel so proud of the career I had chosen, and that the three years of training we had just completed was worth all of the time and effort we had given to it.
Once when I was on night duty at St. Joseph’s Hospital, there was the birth of a child which was extremely ill. A telephone call was placed to the Bishop’s Palace, asking for a priest to please come as soon as possible. Father Stack came immediately, baptised the child, and comforted the parents. It meant so much to all of us present there.
Father Stack, you added so much to the lives of just so many people. Thank you for all you gave to everyone.

A couple of memories I have of Fr. Ray Stack: 1) on the tragic occasion of my late sister's death, Fr. Ray came to our residence in the evening after her funeral, knowing that we were very heavy-hearted. Fr. Ray had that unique ability to bring solace to all of us with his comical anecdotes that kept us in stitches laughing at what he told us that it made us forget our own immediate sorrows for a while. Fr. Ray's ability to mimic some of the people he described in their speech and mannerisms brought a humourous insight into the antics which he saw inside the Rectories without violating confidentiality.
2) An excellent homilist, Fr. Ray knew how to drive home a point gently, yet forcefully, without frightening anyone. He spoke very humbly of himself during his 50th Sacerdotal Anniversary celebration at the Cathedral and he had the congregation giving him a standing ovation.
3) On another occasion during a homily at a daily Mass, Fr. Ray mentioned how one should never judge someone who has committed suicide, as he was talking about Judas Iscariot's suicide after betraying Christ. Fr. Ray stated truly, that we NEVER know what was going on in the person's mind. With this knowledge, I contacted him to get advice for a friend whose nephew committed suicide and whose priest said that her brother "was in serious trouble." I contacted Fr. Ray to get some insight and he mentioned to me that after describing to him what I read to him, that that parish priest unwisely counseled his parishioner who was so much in need of some consolation, given the nature of the manner in which my friend's nephew died.
