Dear members of Hugh's family,
I just read of Hugh's death in The New Freeman.
I will include Hugh and family members in my prayers.
A flood of memories come to mind, beginning with St. Thomas High School & University in Chatham at the time - when I first met Hugh.
Following my ordination in 1967 I was at the Cathedral - across Waterloo Street from Fitzpatrick's Funeral Home. Mary, I clearly remember your dear parents Hugh sr. and Dorothy who were 'salt of the earth'. Hugh was working with his parents in the family funeral business at the time. I have wonderful memories of my 5 years at the Cathedral and the many visits to the funeral home, where I experienced both the faith and welcome of the Fitzpatrick family.
I've lived in the NWT for the past 30 years. I was surprised to receive a call from Hugh jr. a couple of years ago - just to 'catch-up'.
He certainly loved life, with his strong Irish personality.
May he experience and enjoy eternal life.
Fr.. Joe Daley, Yellowknife NT

Dear Carol and Family,
What a full, full life Hugh lived. He loved family, he loved Saint John and he loved his Irish ancestry. St. Patrick's Day will not be the same again without him. He will be remembered for these and many other things he involved himself with - always at 100% energy. But he left too soon, with many more things on a 'to do' list I'm sure.
Please accept our sincere condolences.

Hughie was a kind and gracious soul who was always ready for fun...especially on St Paddy’s day. He treated myself, his namesake and a lot of our friends to some memorable (or shall I say not easily remembered) nights at the St Patrick's Society annual dinner on March 17. This was always Hughie Sr’s night out and boy did he make it count. Was honoured and privileged to have been part of that for so long. I’m sad I did not get to see Hugh recently but know he is likely in a much better place at this time. We will miss you Hugh thanks for the memories and all the support and guidance you provided me through the years. - Stu MacDougall

When you rest upon it,
May it rest cozy over you when
at the last, you lay under it

That your soul may be out
From under it

Hughie was the epitome of an Irish Canadian Saint Johnner! His love of life shared with all he met was infectious. Whether it was Saint Patrick’s week, community celebrations or gathering with his beloved alumni from St. Thomas University, Hugh was the embodiment of social fun and friendship. Over the years, he helped many quietly and carefully and made a difference in the lives of those lucky enough to know him. His knowledge of the history of families, especially the Irish catholic families gave him insight into what was needed and wanted by citizens of Canada’s most Irish city. Hugh never failed to offer help to the less fortunate and this will stand him in good stead when Saint Peter welcomes him.
Thank you Hughie Fitzpatrick and May God hold you warmly in the palm of his hand!

Hugh was a both a good friend and a true character. While we both grew up in Saint John, I first got to know Hugh well at St. FX w hen he and the late Mike O'Brien were dormitory mates in Xavier Hall and frequently retreated to the nearby room shared by myself and the late Michael Flood in the Broadway suites in Xavier Hall. That friendship continued for over 60 years with tongue in cheek insults while celebrating our mutual Irish heritage. Upholding the all male tradition of the St. Patrick's Society was a bastion from which he never retreated on the basis that the annual dinner was the only male only celebration still in existence. Hugh will be missed but certainly not forgotten

Living around the corner we saw each other almost daily.
He was filled with humor and kindness and always had a story.
Always successful but never arrogant or boastful but always a friend.
God bless Hughie and family during this time off sadness but remember Hughie is not sad as he is definitely smiling and of course laughing.

Diane and I are sadden to learn of Hughie passing. A kind soul, we shared a love of horse racing and the Irish Society in Saint John. Annually before Covid, we met at Hughie's with Carol and their friends for an Irish reception before March 17 Dinner. Any time we met during the year Hugh always knew how many days to go till March 17. He was a close friend of many of my friends especially an old school mate of his Terry Gulliver and my good friend Gerald Alexander who was also a past President of the Irish Society. Since Gerald passing, Hughie always keep me in the loop by inviting me to his Reception and to the Dinner. We always met many of the hard working Saint Johners who help forged the city and our province there . Our condolences to Carol and the boys. Glen ( Bucky) and Diane McEwen.

My condolences to Hugh's family.Hugh was a family friend, however I got to know him more personally when he visited Sobeys when he would be in looking for some Irish cheeses , in particular he frequently asked for Dubliner or Blarney Castle which it seemed were two of his favourites. Over the last 12 ton15 years I would run into Hugh at different events and he always left me laughing , then he would be on his way with a chuckle. My son came home several months ago after an evening out and said" Dad ,I met this guy at O'Leary's who was very well versed on which part of Ireland our ancestors came from,". After he described this man I said was his name Hugh ...and he said yes...so 3 generations of my family all were fans of Hugh...RIP Hugh...St Peter is probably laughing already .
