Obituary of Alfred Karl Misch
It is with great sadness that the family of Alfred Karl Misch announces his passing which occurred on Monday, December 28, 2020, at the age of 77 at the Loch Lomond Village Nursing Home, where he had been a resident since March. Born in Austria on July 3, 1943, he was the son of the late Maria Misch (Jeitler) and Johann Misch.
Fred is survived by his daughter, Ruth Whittaker of Rothesay, NB; son, Alfred Misch Jr. of Oromocto, NB; aunt and uncle, Brigitte and Ernest Sperl of Quispamsis, NB; cousin, Ruth Sperl of Saint John, NB; niece, Marie LeBlanc of Saint John, NB; and niece and nephews, Uli, Herwig, Jorgen, and Peter Misch of Austria. In addition to his parents, Fred was predeceased by his brother Hans.
Fred emigrated to Canada as a young man in his 20’s, coming to Saint John where his aunt and uncle from Austria were living. He quickly adapted to this new adventure and lived the rest of his life in the Saint John area, most recently in Maces Bay, NB.
He was employed at Ocean Steel and the Irving Pulp and Paper Mill as a millwright for 29 years, from April 1970 to November 1999 and was a member of the Paper Workers Union of Canada Local 601. He was also an accomplished blacksmith. In addition, he was a jack of all trades and could be counted on to repair anything if someone needed a hand.
In his younger days, Fred was a member of a local motorcycle club along with being a talented trials competitive motorcyclist and stock car enthusiast. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and greatly enjoyed outdoor activities. He was also a very social person, a great storyteller, and loved to host gatherings for his friends and family. Fred also enjoyed cooking and barbequing and lived his life according to his own terms with a simple good-natured spirit.
Fred also loved animals and was a contributor to a host of animal welfare agencies. He had a real bond with his best friend Chico the Chihuahua, whom he would take motorcycling with him, dressed in complete motorcycle gear. In his later years, he took great joy in feeding and nurturing the wild animals that would frequent his backyard, from the smallest squirrel to the many deer.
Fred was generous to a fault and radiated warmth and kindness to his friends and family and was always ready to help anyone in need.
The family would like to thank his nurse Mark Brown and the caregivers at the Loch Lomond Village Maple House for the great care given to Fred during his stay there.
