Obituary of Joan Beverley Stoney (Ring)
It is with deep sorrow that the family of Joan Stoney announces her passing on January 26th, 2021. Joan died at Shannex Parkland, Lily Court Memory Unit after contracting COVID-19.
Born July 20th, 1932, in Saint John, Joan was the daughter of well-known Millidgeville boat-builder Grenville Ring, and his wife Margaret (White). Joan and her younger brother, Bobby Ring grew up in Millidgeville, surrounded by a village full of relatives… Rings, Whites, and Seeleys. Joan attended the one room schoolhouse on Manners Sutton Road, and always considered herself a proud graduate of the Saint John Vocational School Class of 1950. Joan met the man of her dreams, Malcolm (Rocky) Stoney in 1950, and they married in July 1953, embarking of a 23-year military odyssey that saw their family move to Kingston, Petawawa, Germany, Calgary, Kingston (again), and Gagetown. Joan and Rocky had three children, Margo, Beth (both born in Saint John), and Rob (born in Germany). In 1976, Joan’s intense love for her ‘beautiful river’ prompted the family to move back to Manners Sutton Road, and Joan lived there with Rocky for the next 44 years - next door to the house where she grew up.
Joan was known as the family record keeper and meteorological chronicler. She kept a detailed Daily Log of the comings and goings in Brothers Cove, along Millidge Avenue and Manners Sutton Road, and had many people calling for her recollections of local events and strange happenings in the area. Joan loved her time at the family Camp at Polly Sam’s Point, and on her boat, “Pelican”. “Mom”, “Aunt Joan”, or “Nannie” could always be counted on to have exactly what every kid wanted to eat at her very well stocked Camp, and the provisions she kept onboard the Pelican would put the Navy to shame! She was always ready to voice her opinion; however, she was also kind-hearted and willing to help anyone who needed it. Just remember to stay clear of the “Ring” stare and the wagging “White” finger!
Joan loved her husband, Rocky, and treasured her daughters Margo and Beth, and son, Rob. She was immensely proud of her grandsons, Mark Jordan, Malcolm Wallace, and John Stoney, and spoiled her granddaughters, Liane Jordan, Julia Carlson, and Helen Stoney. Joan was an outstanding grandmother, and never failed to take her grandchildren’s side in any dispute with their parents! She was equally pleased to be a Great-Nannie to Brooklynn, Addison and Dean Jordan, Penelope Jordan-Robert, and to Devyn and Levi Baker.
Joan lost the love of her life, Rocky, in April 2020, and recently lost her only sibling, Bobby Ring, a short three weeks ago. She is survived by her daughter Margo Stoney (Jordan/Carlson/Daigle) and her children Mark Jordan (Lisa), Liane Jordan (Reno), and Julia Carlson (Cory), daughter Beth Wallace (Charlie), and their son Malcolm Wallace (Chelsea), son Rob Stoney (Kelly) and their children John and Helen Stoney, and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Ring, nephews, Bobby and Geodie Ring, niece Liza Ring-Dineen, and their families. Joan will always be remembered as a prolific baker of cookies, as an outstanding letter writer and care package provider for far-flung family members, as the family matriarch who kept everyone on their toes, and as the final authority on all things that could or could not happen on the beach at the Camp! She died peacefully in Millidgeville, within a mile of where she spent the majority of her life, and within sight of the river that she loved so dearly.
Joan’s family would also like to thank the staff of Shannex Parkland, Lily Court Memory Care Unit for their helpful, professional, and compassionate
