Sorry for my late condolences, I just found out about Reverend Golding’s passing. I’m a former Day Boy from RCS, and have told my wife more than once that my favourite teacher back then (and all time), was “The Rev.” he used to teach History/Geography back then and I am still interested in these subjects partly because of him.
Rest In Peace, sir…

I was most surprised and deeply saddened upon learning of the sudden passing of my longtime friend, the Rev, Jim Golding. My deepest condolences to his family and close friends.
Jim quickly became my first friend upon transferring to Victoria School in the 4th grade. We shared many memorable activities, including the pleasure of playing championship basketball, coached by the legendary Bob Neal.
I've always admired Jim's kindness, faith and ability to positively cope with adversity. He will be sorely missed by the many who have had the good fortune to know and experience life with him. Rest in peace, my friend.bb

My family was saddened to read of Rev. Golding's passing. He was a dear friend to my late father, Bobby Barr, and they shared a passion for golf. I have fond memories of him at Westfield Golf Club, especially his time supervising the Junior program in the early 1970s. My sincere condolences to Jane and family.

It was with great regret to hear of Jim Golding’s death last Saturday. He was an extraordinary man in so many ways. I look back to 1982 when I was appointed as the new Headmaster at what was then RCS and Netherwood, and remember how the ‘Rev’ took me under his wing. His easy manner and wonderful wit allowed me to become quite familiar with the obvious differences in the two schools and their Boards of Governors. RCS had come through a period of revolving heads, and Jim was the ‘stable rock’ who guided me through many potential problems.
Within a year, Jim had a back operation that left him mostly in a wheelchair. He thought that this would make him redundant to the school, and was delighted when we showed him what we had done to accommodate his ability to move around the school – especially getting into the Chapel and dining hall. It was all done because we could not contemplate the School without him.
During my five year at the school, I was constantly reminded of his passion for the School and his love of teaching. In this regard he could never be called a “traditional teacher”, but this only made him more effective. My eldest daughter (Kendra) to this day rates him one of the best teachers she has ever had. She is herself a teacher, and her two sons are attending the school.
Each time we visited NB to see our children, we tried to visit with Jim, either at his home or when in hospital. The visits always left us feeling better than when we came, mostly because of Jim’s positive optimism for life, and his faith.
Unfortunately, my wife and I will be unable to attend his funeral due to covid-19 restrictions on travel. But make no mistake we will there in spirit, as we will be watching the funeral-livestream. May he rest in eternal peace.

David Barr (RCS 1971-76)
Jane, Family and Friends of "The Rev",
It is with sadness that I recently learned of the passing of The Rev. But it also brought back so many fond memories of his strength of character, his kindness, and the moral and ethical example he set and lived by for all of us to admire and be influenced by.
And it also brings back to the fore the immense gratitude I have for all the big and small things he did, not just for me, but for all four "Barr Kids."
I was the first to attend RCS in our family and did so at age 12 with my family on the other side of the ocean in Europe. I certainly didn't have any "Rothesay connections." From the very start he and Lynne kept an eye out for me. I volunteered to be part of the Choir and was a chapel clerk right from the start - even though I was initially so small and light that I had difficulty ringing the bell each morning and it would lift me off the ground - much to his delight!. Eventually I was confirmed by The Rev in the school church and in my final year (VIth Form) I was his Senior Chapel Clerk.
He was aware that, although I was part of a very proud military family, I certainly did not come from an established family of wealth as so many of my schoolmates did. He deliberately gave me the opportunities to earn pocket money by doing weekly spit shines of his boots (for 50 cents I will have you know!) and more significantly as the family babysitter of a very young Jane.
I will end this small tribute with my most enduring memory of The Rev. You might think it was in a church or pastoral setting. But the memory I want to share is of The Rev flooding the ice in the RCS Arena most nights in the winter. In those days, it was an "indoor" arena but the ice was natural. Most often he would be alone, with a long garden hose wearing study winter boots and warm gloves. He did this recurring solitary task out of sight and not looking for attention or public acknowledgment. He did it for love of the School, love for all of the students (his flock), and ...well...because he was "The Rev."
He was a good man. Rest in well earned peace.
Colonel (Ret'd) David Barr, Canadian Special Operations Forces.

So sorry for the loss of this great man. I only got to know Jim well in the last twenty years, chiefly as a fellow member of a scholarship committee at UNB. Jim couldn't have been loved more by those students he met and came to know. At every lunch or dinner he would be surrounded by them, caring, joking and laughing. It was a pleasure to witness. He was the great comfort on our interview panel, the one who made the students forget their nerves and put their best forward. I will miss him so much in that role and for the fun we had together in those years. My deepest condolences to all of Jim's loved ones. Sincerely, Liz Meier

Jane and family:
It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of "The Rev." He was a fantastic mentor at RCS/Netherwood to myself and to my "Barr" brothers and sister during the 70s & 80s.
He took me for my first proper golf game in Grade 10 and tolerated my awful play. I still play today -- not well -- but I always adhere to his famous "play it as it lies" philosophy in both sports and life. I also fondly remember the impromptu Friday night pizza parties at the Golding's House with The Rev holding court with Lynne and "Little Jane." It was not lost on me that these pizza nights usually happened on long weekends when us long-haul boarders had no where else to go.
Please accept my sincere condolences. He will be missed.

My deepest heartfelt condolences to Jane and family. I know Father Jim treasured your being close by. I could write a chapter or two on my interactions with this dear man of God. Playful retorts on Golf and Music were most often at the forefront of our encounters. The Rev.’s life exemplar parallels a golf truism. "Play it as it lies”. One takes what he gets and figures it out making the best of it so that he can move forward.
Buoyed by the cheerful sound of Saint Paul’s men singing for their breakfast, Father Jim wanted more. “We’ll meet again” an appropriate farewell for the Snelgroves was their encore. I’m asking my dear pal to put in a good word for me so we can “Meet Again”.

Jane and Family: You are in our thoughts and prayers. Father Jim was not only one of our ministers but also a very dear friend. I remember the evening that we spent with Jim and Lynn at their home in Millidgeville. Jim prepared the dinner, including a delicious pie for dessert; I think that maybe he had baked an apple pie. Regardless of the variety, he had promised us a home-baked pie, and it was to be a pie he had made! Our sympathy and condolences go out to you.

Dear Jane and family, we knew Rev Jim from St. Paul’s Valley Church, visiting him at the town house in Millidgeville and then at Lo Wood. He always knew that he was a better person because your mother and you were in his life. He was a great theologian who enjoyed discussing the heavy topics of theology. He preached a great sermon and made a delicious gingerbread, which we had the privilege of eating a time or two. Many of us are better off for having known him.

This wonderful man was so endearing, caring, empathetic and just had the power in his voice to uplift you and to settle you when you needed it. It was almost as though he could read you, feel your emotions and know exactly what to say to make you feel exceptional. He was a limited edition. I used to enjoy our visits, our facebook conversations (lengthy on my part, never on his). If I got a thumbs up as a response, I knew it was great. He would mesmorize me with his endless stories leaving the story unended so we could hear more ( and chomping at the bit to hear the ending). Jimmy was a huge part of our life from the get go. He will always hold a special place in my heart. It is rare that you grow up with such a wonderful mentor and my husband and children have that special bond with him, as well. Rest well "cloth" and keep telling the stories and spreading the love.
