Obituary of Margaret Evelyn Halvorsen
It is with great sadness that the family of Margaret Evelyn Halvorsen announces her passing at Rocmaura Nursing Home on March 19, 2021. Born in Saint John on September 28, 1927, she was the daughter of the late George and Margaret (Scott) Bannister.
Know as Marg to friends and family, she grew up on Richmond Street in Saint John. Marg excelled at school and was considered gifted in math and was featured in the local paper. Sadly, she dropped out of school as there was no money to pay for her books.
Her work life included being a photographic colourist, book binder at MacMillan press, line worker at Simms brush factory and Crosby's Molasses. Eventually settling into a career as a nurse’s aide working at Sunny Acres nursing home, then Loch Lomond Villa from which she retired.
Favourite activities included music, dancing, walks and picnics, and of course mystery novels and stories. Marg loved oil painting and would often spend hours at a canvas as her daughter, Gloria, puttered on the piano. She loved animals and they always to loved her back. She married her sweetheart, Gordon, after he returned from WW2. He had a shy artistic side and loved poetry and gardening. They were a good fit and truly loved each other.
Margaret is survived by her daughter: Gloria Halvorsen; sister: Audrey McInnis; nieces & nephews: Pat & Malcolm MacKenney, George & Cathy McInnis and David McInnis.
Besides her parents and her husband Gordon, she was predeceased by her siblings: Bernice Bannister, Florence Shannon, Roy Bannister and George Bannister.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, Saint John (634-7424). A funeral service will take place on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at 2 PM in Brenan’s Chapel. Memorial donations to the Salvation Army may be made and online condolences may be placed at www.BrenansFH.com.
