Obituary of Valerie April Smith

The final page has been written in Mom’s Life journey.  With loved ones by her side she took her last breath at Bobby’s Hospice on Monday, April 12, 2021. Born in Saint John on April 2, 1957, she was a daughter of the late Gerald and Irene (Tubb) Bastarache.

Valerie will be missed by her sons: Colton Smith (Kayla) and Morgan Smith (Mary); grandchildren: Isabelle, Madilyn and Nolan; step-granddaughters: Mary, Myra and Anna; siblings: Christina McIntyre, Verna Gray, Lawrence Bastarache, Gerald Bastarache, Jeanet Hachey, Bruce Bastarache, Ivan Bastarache (Patsy), Phillip Bastarache, Hartly Bastarache and Rachel Clark (Donald). She will be lovingly remembered by her special niece Corrina Flooks, as well as numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins; and forever cherished by two special strong women, Julie Rioux and Laura Scott.

In addition to her parents, Valerie was predeceased by two infant siblings; brother John; sister Ina Flooks; brother-in-law George Grey; grandnephew Wayne Saunders; and stepfather Garnet Wood.

Before her passing, Valerie wrote this note of her appreciation: “A special thank you to the Saint John Regional Palliative Care Unit for the easy transition to Bobby’s Hospice. A very special thank you to all the staff at Bobby’s Hospice for your devotion, care, patience and love. You have made the final steps of the transition peaceful and spiritual for me and my family. A special thank you to two more strong, beautiful women: my sister Verna, and daughter-in-law Mary – your devotion, love, and support during this time I could never forget. I love you to the moon and beyond.”

Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (634-7424). A private graveside service will be held at Fernhill Cemetery.
