Just learning of Don's passing. My deepest condolences to the McCabe family. I had the pleasure of meeting Don when I was a student at IPP in 1995. While I learned alot about the mill from Don while I was there, it was outside of work I got to know Don the best through sports. He introduced me to the shinny hockey gang in Saint John and I got to play ball against him under the lights in my hometown of Hoyt on occasion (Don would marvel at the "if you build it, they will come" pertaining to lights there). We would usually try to connect yearly since then and get some golf in or at least meet for a bite at a local establishment (failing that, a phone call/text to catch up where health issues or covid got in the way). He was always genuinly interested in how my family and I were doing. You will be deeply missed Don. RIP

Don McCabe was my mentor when I did my research trial at Irving Pulp & Paper back in 2003 - 2004. I am very saddened and would like to pass on my sincere condolences. Don was always kind, always considerate, and reasonable. Truly wonderful colleague. He will be sorely missed.

I first met Don at the annual University of Toronto research conference on recovery boilers. Over many years I enjoyed his dry wit and knowledge while presenting or providing feedback on papers. We would often share a beer after a days session and discuss our respective mills and life in general. I'll miss Don.

My sincere condolences to the McCabe family. I met Don in 1990 when I became the newest member of the Technical Department.
He took me under his wing , showed me the ropes and helped me feel like part of the family.
Don was highly respected engineer who coached and mentored many students, young engineers, operators and managers in
process matters. More than that, he was a friend to many and even though we disagreed at times on certain issues I knew I was in good with him when he would bring me a piece of his Mother's cherished orange chocolate cake!!! Don was a kind person. I remember one year on bring your child to work day I brought the daughter of a friend of mine to work with me. Don came into my office twice that day - once to bring her some Hallowe'en candy and the other to show her a picture of his mother's little puppy!
The girl said to me - what a nice man he is!
The news of Don's passing has hit many of us hard. I find some comfort that in my last call with him, he was very happy and we had a great conversation about the good old days.
Rest in peace, my old friend!

My deepest condolences to the McCabe family. Don was a great mentor to me when I first started in the Technical Department at IPP in 1996. He always took the time to answer any questions I had, and could always be relied on for his expertise. He was a good teacher, and explained things very well. Don and I had some really good conversations about food, cooking, skiing, the little papillon (dog), his time growing up in Montreal, and his family. When I spoke with him this spring, I didn't think that would be the last conversation we'd have... You will be missed Don

My sincere condolences to the McCabe Family. I had the pleasure of working with Don in the technical department for over 20 years. He was my go-to person whenever I had a question about the mill process. Don always took the time to answer my many questions with great detail. We had many fun times playing golf and hockey. He will be missed. RIP Don.

My deepest condolences to the McCabe family. Don and I met at the U of T consortium meetings as well as at various TAPPI and PAPTAC conferences throughout the years where we had great discussions on recovery and recausticizing operations. I clearly remembered a few times when we would always challenged each other with a walk to the Mandarin restaurant and a walk back to the hotel during our meetings at U of T. I also recalled our last meeting was at the Suwanna Thai restaurant, after Don retired from Irving, but we still continued our discussions on recovery and recaust., as well as shared some good laughs and memories. Don will be missed.

My deepest condolences to Don’s family.
I first met Don when he just joined Irving Pulp & Paper in 1985 as a process engineer in the bleach plant area. I visited the mill at least once a year till COVID struck in early 2019. During the visits, I often hang out with Don, particularly after he became more involved in recovery and recaust. \
Don had been our key contact person at Irving Pulp & Paper for more than 20 years until his retirement in 2017. Whenever we needed mill samples, information/operating data, Don always found time to get them to us. When I took our graduate students and research staff to do field studies at the mill, Don always welcomed them and provided them with all the things they needed for their work.
Don attended and presented talks at our annual research consortium meetings at the University of Toronto many times. His knowledge of chemical recovery was awesome and broad, and he was always willing to share them with us. He and I co-authored at least four technical papers. I learned a lot from him.
Don’s favorite food was Thai. He and I had dinner at the Suwanna near the mill every time I visited Saint John. Thai food was also his mother’s favorite. So, when she was still around, we always ordered extra dishes for Don to take home for her. During his last visit to Toronto in 2016, I took him to The Lee Garden, which in my opinion, the best Chinese restaurant in town to show it off. But after the dinner, Don said “Well, Suwanna is better….”.
Although his health was not great in recent years, he was always cheerful. He loved to talk about the good old days when he could play hockey, take his little puppy out for a walk, dig himself out after a heavy snowstorm, and visit his sister Ann and her family in Halifax.
Don was a dedicated and skillful engineer. He was a great collaborator, a strong supporter of our research at the University of Toronto, a thorough reviewer of a chapter in the new “Kraft Recovery Boilers” book, and most importantly a great friend of us. Don will be dearly missed.
May he rest in peace.

So sorry to hear of Don’s passing. When he lived in Port Hawkesbury he played hockey with Dave and I remember we invited him over for supper! He was a wonderful person. Dave was also very impressed with the car Donnie was driving at the time...a car that ‘talked’ to you! Sincere condolences from Dave and Lesley Carruthers.

Our condolences to Don's family. Like myself, Don was a long term member of the PAPTAC Bleaching Committee. He contributed a lot to the committee, helping to advance our understanding not only Bleaching but other aspects of the pulp mill. His dry wit was memorable.
Our friendship got stronger through the years. He will be truly missed by myself, the members of the Bleaching Committee and everyone he impacted.
