Ruby, John and Steven I have to say even though I only actually saw Bunny a time or two and don't think I ever met you Ruby and the boys only from afar but you couldn't be married to Herb Sherwood and not feel I "knew" all of you. Herb's work was such a big part of who he was that I was so happy that he had his last years at Fundy Bay because he was so content there so much so that it was very difficult for him to retire. I truly grieve with you because of that.

I am so sorry for you loss. I recall Bunny's name being spoken often by my father (Herb Sherwood). Dad thought the world of Bunny and loved working at Fundy Bay.

Sorry for your loss. I never did meet Bunny, but my Dad, Sam Buote worked for him for years. When my Dad was not able drive Bunny put him to work in the scale house. Bunny was very good to my family and will always be thankful to him. They are probably catching up on old times as we speak.

So very sorry to read of Bunny's passing. I spent many of my working years driving truck for Fundy Bay and after retirement always enjoyed dropping by for a visit. Bunny was a very kind and caring employer who treated his employees with respect. My condolences to Ruby, Johnny & Stephen.

Thanks Donnie. We often talk about you and Herbie Sherwood(RIP). You both set the standard for professional dump truck drivers, but you were much more than employees, you are considered friends that brought humour and steadiness to work everyday. Stop in and say hello when you get a chance.

Ruby and family,
Sincere condolences to you all. Bunny was like a second father to my dad. I (Lindsay) have lots of memories running around the pit and “patiently” waiting in the office for my dad and Bunny to stop talking, haha. Sending lots of love and support through this difficult time.
Lindsay, Matt, and Dale on behalf of our dad, Robbie Halpin

So sorry to hear of Bunny's passing. A real gentleman, with a legend of stories about him ,that couldn't take place in these times.Sadly, these larger than life figures are running out of time. They aren't making men like Bunny anymore. Take comfort in the memories you have . Lloyd, Gary and David Galbraith

Back on Feb. 26,1931 Bunny was born in a lumber camp in the woods of Nova Scotia. He was the seventh child to Orland and Belle. The next day it was back to work for his mom, there was a lumber crew that needed feeding. Such was life in the depression in Collingwood, NS.,work the farm in the summer and the woods in winter. At 12 years of age Bunny went to work in the woods, doing a man's work, with a bucksaw and a double axe, paid by the cord. He told us about diggng clams around 5 Islands. At some point he and his brothers got on the train and headed west. Bunny landed in Saint John, looked around and thought, this looks like a place a guy could make a living. Like many in those days there was work at the port, he opened up a small pawn shop near Red Rose Tea, then a bigger store on Union Street where the Aquatic Center now is, selling records, lots of guitars, used furniture. His next adventure was an even bigger store on City Road. Mostly used furniture, appliances. Sons Stephen and John and his close friend Lloyd Chamberlain 's son Freddie helped with deliveries. In his spare time in the mid-sixties Bunny and Gordie Halpin and Mike Atkinson(from Moncton) built Hammond River Speedway at Murray Crowlie's farm near Hammond River. So many stories from those days, too many for here.
In the mid seventies Bunny started Fundy Bay Holdings,a construction company. The first jobs involved water and sewerage jobs, residential infrastructure installations, work on the Glen Falls Dam. Bunny started into the gravel business in Latimore Lake, East Saint John soon after. Bunny worked until into his early eighties. He loved his work, the people, Mack trucks, Cat loaders.
Where ever Bunny was, he drew friends around him. They could write a book about the adventures he and his friends went on. Growing up as his and Ruby's son, there was never a lack of love in our home.
I must say, Bunny loved big cars. Johnny told me one of his favorites was a 1948 Oldsmobile. Johnny will have to provide the model. My earliest memory of being in a car was a 1959 Cadillac convertible, black with the big fins, 62 and 64 Thunderbirds. Oh to have some of those cars today.
Dad had big hands, working hands. One of my favorite things about him. Most of his friends are gone now, Big Alex, Gordie Halpin, Lloyd Chamberlain, Gerry Kane, Joe MacDonald, Jimmy Bernard, Big Bernie Mersereau,Johnny Ritchie, Ralph Stephen... it would be a long list.
I will try to put some pictures up soon. The picture posted was taken at Lily Lake in the fifties. Thank you to everyone for the condolences. Bunny often laughed and told us he didn't expect to get to forty, he was just a few weeks shy of 91.
Put the peddle to the metal Bunny as you soar across the stars.

I became friends with Bunny back in the 1980s when I visited him and his crew at work each week with my tools truck. Years passed but we reconnected when I needed fill and soil. We enjoyed some good visits in his office during that project. He was a good man who stopped in Saint John while travelling through. He stayed, built a business and helped Saint John to become the city it is today. Many friends will miss him. To Stephen and all the family, we are grateful for Bunny's legacy and know you have many wonderful memories of a good man.
