Obituary of Ulker Ozerdam

On Christmas Day, 2002, the angels came for Űlker (Sűnter) Őzerdem, of the Loch Lomond Villa, beloved wife of Nihat Őzerdem, following a lengthy illness. A professional sculptor, she was born in Istanbul, Turkey, the daughter of the late M. Irfan Sűnter and Nezahat (Fehmi) Sűnter. She held a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from U.N.B., Fredericton. She also studied at Brooklyn School of Arts in New York City on a Fulbright Scholarship. Űlker possessed a lifelong thirst for knowledge and was well-read in every subject. She also had a very green-thumb. Her megawatt smile and sparkling green eyes endeared her to all those she met. During the time she lived in Fredericton, she was active in the Fredericton Art Club, University Women's Club, Sculptor's Society of Canada, and International Sculpture Centre, USA. She spoke English, Turkish, French, and some German. Her sculptures were exhibited internationally, nationally, as well as locally. She had an outdoor installation on permanent display in Charlottetown, PEI. Her work graces various homes and offices, including wings C and E South of the Loch Lomond Villa. Űlker was predeceased by her parents, and by her sister, Inci Sűnter in 1985. She is survived by her devoted husband, Nihat, daughter, Summer (Idil), son-in-law, Leo Coyle, and precious granddaughter, Lyla Coyle. The family would like to express deep gratitude to the caring staff of the Villa, all of the RNs, LPNs, caregivers, and other staff members of Wings C and E South, who made Űlker's two years at the Villa brighter. By request of the family, there was no visitation. Private funeral service was held at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506)634-7424, (www.brenansfh.com), on Friday, December 27, 2002 at 3:00 P.M. Interment in Cedar Hill Extension Cemetery, Manawagonish Road. The family also wishes to express gratitude to the Saint John Muslem Community. Family e-mail is: ozerdem@nbnet.nb.ca
