I was sad to hear of the passing of Coach butch Cogswell. Butch had a profound impact on many young boys through is passion for basketball but also teaching right from wrong. I had the pleasure of playing for Butch and was a member of a team that won one of the juvenile championships mentioned in the obituary, in fact I was part of the team picture although not seen. We won in Montreal and Butch loved those trips and while wanting us to have a good time he always made sure we towed the line and behaved properly. Sincere condolences to his family, he will be missed.

Brenda and I send our deepest condolences on Butch's passing. He will be remembered by so many people because that was who he was. He knew a lot of people and was friends with everyone. His legacy was just that, working in the community not just as a Policeman, Detective and Chief but a Community Leader from basketball, Boys Adventure Camp, Boys & Girls Club, he seemed to be everywhere in Saint John. I have some great memories working for him on the Police Force and along side him running the Boys Adventure Camp. He always talked about his family, basketball and the Job. Certainly we had some great chats while drinking cups of tea in the lodge at Camp Wegesegum after getting the kids settled into their cabins. We never know what the good Lord has in store for us, but he broke the mold with him. God Bless. Keep the tea pot on Butch, I see you again someday.

I first met Butch at the age of 14. I was invited to play for his Police Athletic league basketball team. We played our games at the CYO and Rotary Boys and Girls club courts. Always the great basketball coach and the great life coach, the number of people that he shepherded to the right road would be countless. So fortunately for me, Butch became a lifelong friend. He was my hero then and he will always be my hero.

Chief Cogswell called me too his office after a tragic automobile accident I had dealt with on highway 7 as a young constable. He was simply concerned about how I felt about the incident. When my Dad was near death at the Regional Hospital he granted me time off to deal with this family situation when I did not ask. He was a compassionate man. He would sometimes roll up behind you at a traffic stop to make sure all went well. He did not always say he was watching your back. My sincere condolences to his family Retired Sergeant Ramsey Hunt

To the family,children,grandchildren & friends
We are deeply sorry for the loss of your beloved one Butch. Such a great loss for the policing & community & all who knew him
Butch was a very special friend & caring man. I didn’t see it in his citations but he was down on the Proud Road with Lenny Tonge & I can’t remember who the third one was but my brother was disobedient & went for a swim with friends & was told not to. So they went there was no life guard or anyone there but the children swimming my brother went out to far & was drowning the children went for help & Butch & Lenny just happened to be patrolling the road they hear the children screaming they jumped into the lake guns & uniforms on they saved my brothers life he was going down for the 3rd time & he had long hair & they were able to grab his hair & pull him up they performed C. P. R. On him & revived him & he went by ambulance to the hospital if it wasn’t for them he wouldn’t be here today. So they truly are our heroes they should of been recognized for this .We will be forever grateful. He is one amazing man my mother loved Butchie he came to her funeral in uniform & had police escort my mum would of been so proud & honoured to think he did this for her but that was Butch so caring & thoughtful. Sorry we won’t be able to pay respect or attend the service because we are In Ontario till August 9th .but you are in our daily thoughts and prayers. May you R.I.P.Butch. We love you. God just received another special angel. Sending love ❤️ God Bless

Much saddened upon learning of Butch's death. I've known Butch since I was 14 and played on a Rotary Club basketball team that he coached ... that was 66 years ago. And we played on Senior teams together. Over the years I called him Coach Cogswell, Officer Cogswell and Chief Cogswell .... but most of all I called him a true and loyal "friend". We were both "South-Enders" in the early years, and we would often chat about growing up there. I've never met a better motivator ..... he didn't know the meaning of the word "impossible". He was a "helper" throughout his life ..... we're all going to miss him.
