My wife and I lived across the street from Gladys, although we didn't know her well, I was very sad to hear of her passing. She was a very kind and appreciative person, she was always happy to have a chat! It seems liked she suffered a lot of loss in her life from some of the stories she told but she remained so positive, bright, and hardworking, very inspiring. Several times she thoughtfully brought toys over for our young son. We will miss hearing her scare the deer away!
Sorry for your loss

Charlotte: I just heard of your Mom's passing yesterday and I wanted to send my condolences to you.
I haven't seen Gladys for many years, but always had fond memories of her from when I was a student , working at the Sugar Refinery with my friend, Lois Carr. Gladys and her Mom were very good friends so over the years, I saw Gladys at Eileen's home. When Lois and I were in Teachers' College, we used to go out to the Stan Cassidy Bldg. and visit with your Dad. He was a very nice person. May all your precious memories help you during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Charlotte: Fun, strong, energetic, loving, a hard worker are words that all describe your mother. For you Gladys is all of those things but most importantly your Mom. There are really no words that can take away the pain but knowing your mother is held in such high regard by so many may bring some peace. Brookville was a special place to grow up and we were like one big family where everyone looked after each other in good times and bad. Please know that many are mourning with you. May you feel God’s love in every kind word and gesture extended to you at this time.

We're so sorry and saddened by the news of Gladys's passing, I've known Gladdy for some time through the pool league's, both as a team mate and as an opponent. You knew when you stepped to the table to shoot her, you knew not to let your guard down or you were on the losing end, with a keen eye Gladdy could pocket balls with the best of them, sincerest condolences to her family, and many of her closest friends at the pool leagues.
God Bless you all.
Rest Easy Sugar, keep your cue hot and keep potting them pool balls. You'll never be forgotten.

I didn't spend a lot of time with my Great Aunt Gladys but I'll never forget when I stopped by her house to drop off some Rouse Family Photos for her. She invited me in, had a big bag of bacon treats for my puppy (which she spoiled him with!) and we had a great chat about life and family. She was such a kind person who always commented on our facebook photos and loved to know what was going on in our lives. I always thought she was such a cool 80 year old that she would go to all these crazy places to play pool and admired that adventuring side of her. She will be missed by many.
Love,
Jane Rouse

To the family of “Gladdy”: our heart-felt sympathy is extended to you on Gladdy’s passing. May she rest in peace.
We first met Gladdy some 14 years ago when we visited our daughter and her family who were neighbours of Gladdy. We used to get together in the evenings in Art’s garage for a few refreshments and some music. She loved the old time country songs, as did the rest of us. She was a fun-loving, kind-hearted lady and we grew very fond of her. Thanks for the memories, Gladdy. Rest in peace.

Charlotte and Gladys family, Dave and I are so sorry for your loss. Dave and I will miss our visits with Glad and having that famous beer with her. She was a remarkable lady that would tackle any job. We loved our years living beneath her. She was a great pool player that introduced Dave to the pool hall. Gladys will certainly be missed by all. RIP Gladys. Keep everyone, in heaven, in line and fix what needs to be repaired.

To Charlotte and Gladys' family, we send our love and prayers to you.
Gladys has been such a big part of all of our lives in the pool playing community. She was the person who you went to for a laugh, maybe a little story or a good old hug when you needed one. When I first met Gladys she told me "I don't do hugs" hahahaaaa! We pool players are huggers and she just let us surround her with as much love as we had to give. In turn she was our friend, our dear sweet friend. Gladys, along with her friend Nan decided they were going to be my son Wilson's grandma...he loved her like she was his own grandmother.
We will miss you Gladys! Heaven will never be the same as you spread your downhome joy around up there.
The thing I know for sure is that you've touched our hearts, and so, our hearts will never be without you.
Love, Bob & Sue Hargrove

My heartfelt condolences to all of Gladys family, and friends. Back in October she gave me her copy of my Father's album, which I am so grateful for, she was so kind, I will miss her hugs. She loved her pool, and she made the trip to the BCA North American 8ball championships quite a few times. We will all miss her kindness, her humor, and all the love she put out there. RIP Gladys.

Our parents, Joy and Fred, bought a big old house in Brookville in December of 1966. The house had 2 apartments upstairs. In one of the apartments lived Gladys and Charlotte, who immediately became part of our extended family. Gladys was 29 years old with a small child and a husband (John) in the hospital with MS. Even then she was fiercely independent with the energy of a 20-year-old, shovelling the driveway in the winter, and mowing the lawn in the summer, after coming home from night shift at the sugar refinery. If her bug needed fixing, she did that too. When she wanted to refinish the hardwood floors, she scraped them by hand. She would put on her bandana and just get down to work. If she didn’t have it, she would build it, if it was broken, she would fix it. She showed me (Krista) a thing or two over the years.
But Gladys was not all work and no play. She loved to dance and listen to country music, have a cool beer, sit on the porch with Joy and Fred and talk about life, or go out with her best friend Marie. There was always lots of fun and laughter when she was around. Always on the go, always upbeat, even when life was difficult. She endured much loss with losing John, but later found love and companionship with Dick Kennedy. However, their time was cruelly cut short as well and Gladys was once again on her own with Charlotte. Still, she moved forward nurturing old friendships, and accumulating new friends and hobbies as she went along. She would try anything, and more often than not, master it in a very short time.
Of course, all the kids loved Gladys. She would often let them do things that we parents considered to be beyond their capabilities, like driving her ride on mower at 10 years old. I guess we had forgotten all the times that we were introduced to changing a tire, or a power tool a bit before the recommended age of use.
Right now, she is probably catching up with those who have gone before her, and while we would like to think that she is enjoying a well-deserved rest, it is more likely that she is making sure that things are running just right.
Our deepest sympathies Charlotte. You were the light of her life. Take comfort in knowing that your mother touched so many lives and left an indelible imprint on this earth.
Bev and Krista

Very sorry to hear the news. Very special lady to me as I was always happy to get a ride in her new cars when she came up to Jolliff's Brook. I have to say the 87 Mercury Cougar was my favorite. Spent me best summer living with her and working for M&R Carpenter. She helped me realize i could fit in anywhere. She always would come out to the lake and see the girls in the summer and almost had her convinced one year to try the stand up jet ski lol. You lived life to the fullest Glad and will be deeply missed. Have fun playing pool and listening to your music. Luv the Gallagher's
