Obituary of John Paul Anthony Francis Campbell
John Campbell Sr.
I wish to announce my passing, which occurred on Wednesday, July 12th, 2023, at Bobby’s Hospice after a challenging battle with cancer. Born on March 18, 1959, in Saint John, I was the son of the late Rose Campbell and David Burnside.
I was pre-deceased by loving grandparents John (Jack) & Alice Campbell, my mom Rosie, father David Burnside and sister Tina Cameron. I am survived by two children John Campbell (Amanda) and Laura Lynn Steeves (Jeremy); five lovely grandchildren Jacob, Abigail & Isabelle Campbell, Logan & Gavin Steeves; six sisters & four brothers.
The advantage of dying from terminal cancer is that you have a few months to compose your own obituary. The disadvantage is you only have a few months to contemplate your life.
I was very proud to serve my country for twenty years in the Canadian Armed Forces with postings across the country including four years in Washington, DC To my military family, I cannot express my joy and excitement of serving with and training such courageous women and men. Your dedication is second to none.
I wish to acknowledge dear friends who stood by me during my ups and down including those moments Dwight referred to as “Sergeant moments;” Christina, Candis, Claudine, Helen, Marcy, Carol, Sonny (Joe), Bud & Marg, Maria & John, Capt. Morgan, Albert Vincent, Joe & Jackie, Gary, Glendon & Alice, Carrie, and Graham. I also want to acknowledge my newly extended family Olha, Olexsandr and Yeva (my little Ukrainian Princess) Oliinyk. To all those unnamed that I got to know during my 64 years of life, I learned something from each of you, whether it was compassion, courage, humility, love, or resilience.
As I look up from my deathbed during the editing of my obituary, I lay here with amazement as I stare at the most caring, thoughtful, and astonishing son. I feel like I learned my life skills from him, and I still have not perfected them.
I cannot go without acknowledging the most intelligent, feisty, hardworking, and dedicated mother in the world, my daughter Laura Lynn. I was there to witness her beautiful red hair breach this side of the world and immediately knew her mother and I were in for the ride of our lives. I could not love these children more.
During my 64 years, I was far from the perfect husband, friend, or human being. Regardless, I was truly fortunate to be married to an amazing woman who I have known for over fifty years. Together we have two remarkable adult children and five amazing grandchildren. I suspect my final coherent thoughts will be of joyful and loving memories of the woman who was my partner.
Papa loves you all.
In keeping with my wishes, arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). On Saturday July 15th, 2023, there will be a Celebration of Life held at Brenan’s between 10am and noon.
