Obituary of Dr. Walter Hayes
The family of Dr. Walter Hayes are sad to announce his passing on July 18, 2023, at Turnbull Nursing Home in Saint John. Born in Saint John, August 3, 1936, Walter was the son of the late Stanley and Grace Hayes.
Dr. Hayes is survived by his dear wife of 63 years, Joan (Cronk) Hayes, two sons, Ronald, and Terry (Bonnie), four grandchildren, David, Christina, Holly and Amy. He is also survived by two great grandchildren, Kennedy and Jaxon and many nieces and nephews.
Walter was predeceased by his parents, his three sisters, Eileen, Phyllis, and Doreen, and by his brother Roland.
Walter grew up in East Saint John and attended Simonds High School and Saint John High. He attended Mount Allison University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Dalhousie University graduating with a Doctor of Dental Surgery. In 1962 he opened his dental practice on Manawagonish Road and continued serving his community for 41 wonderful years until his retirement.
Dr. Hayes was an active lifelong member of the Wesleyan Church where he served as a church board member for many years. Walter also served on the Board of Directors at Kingswood University (Bethany Bible College) for 25 years. Summers were spent with family at the Beulah Campground cottage. His summer vacation days were filled with family, lifelong friendships, and fellowship. He was often found on his boat teaching many of the younger generation of campers and a few older ones how to water ski.
Following his retirement he took his bride, Joanie, off to Myrtle Beach for many winter vacations. We always looked forward to their return and the great stories of their many adventures.
The family would like to sincerely thank the wonderful staff at Turnbull Nursing Home for their exceptional care during his stay.
Walter was a good and kind man with a wonderful sense of humor and the absolute best Husband, Father, and Grand Father. We love you. Our lives will never be the same.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424). At Walter’s request there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held in Brown’s Flat Baptist Cemetery, July 24, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.
