Walter was part of my life from being 5 years old and up. I remember one time we opened and played the piano in UNB’s Hazen Hall even though we “were not allowed”-Walter was always up for a bit of mischief. He was a good friend to my dear friend Leah Learning and we grieved together when she passed away. Walter was full of fun and creativity-I shall miss him.

Walter was a gentle force...always welcoming and incredibly generous. I grew up on Sandy Point Beach Road and would often be woken ,as a young teenager on summer mornings, by the musical array emanating from his steel drums. I would often remind him of this over the years...he would laugh and say 'that must have been annoying'. I replied, 'at first yes, until I realized how truly beautiful it was'. That's what Walter did...he educated us and showed us the importance of music and creativity. The world was a brighter place with Walter in it.

Dear Tzigane,
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Dad. I can’t think of our high school years without your Dad being among the memories. I remember him the most leading the orchestra for Damn Yankees and his steel drum band leadership. Boy, I wish I had been part of that! I also remember him leading us in the madrigal choir and he would drop his teeth to get us to smile on stage! What a character! I will always think of him fondly. Love to your Mom. Deepest condolences to your family. Thinking of you as you go through this journey of grief.

Aunt Sue, Tzigane, Conrad, Spenser & Families,
I was greatly saddened to learn of the recent passing Uncle Walter.
Though I didn't get to see Uncle Walter frequently due to living so far apart, he made a lasting impression.
Full of charisma & infectious enthusiasm for his interests & passions, whether it was music, art, politics, woodcraft, he was fun to be around & always pleased to share. (I still have the rockinghorse masterpiece that Uncle Walter sent as a gift when Brooke was born 30 years ago)
I will always admire Uncle Walter as a genuine free spirit who possessed the conviction to live life on his terms & march to his own beat.
A life well lived.
Please know that my thoughts are with you at this very sad & difficult time.

Dear Suzanne, Tzigane, and Spenser - I've been trying to think of another person who has been as socially, artistically, and politically engaged as Walter, and I can't think of a single one. Creating a music education institution out of old oil drums has to be one of the most audacious recycling projects in Canadian history. Just running into him at an event or on the street was enough to boost your spirit for the whole day and open your mind to at least one new creative venture. If he had gone into business, he would have become a billionaire, but instead, he enriched the entire city of Saint John with his generosity and dynamism - and his self-deprecating, goofy sense of humour. My condolences to you all and to my beloved home town.

Very sorry to hear of Walter's passing and condolences to Suzanne and family. In a recent book I published about the old New Brunswick Symphony (1962-1968), Walter is mentioned but I did not give him the full credit he deserved for working with Phil Oland to organize the old orchestra in the summer of 1962. Those of us involved in Symphony New Brunswick are aware of his commitment to symphonic music in our province and could always count on him to give us well-thought out advice as we struggled to establish SNB as the powerful cultural resource it has now become. Walter will be missed by many friends in the music community.

There are many memories I have of him as a student of his. The experiences we all had together in those crazy, exciting, hardworking, and extant days will be remembered by all of us lucky enough to have performed with him. We were busy, and thus, in retrospect as a 64 year old, I realize, that our intense practices and performances with him, also meant time away from you and your three beautiful kids. But we were kids too. We were his “other kids”. What a privilege. How fortunate we were. How fortunate we all were. And what a legacy. Thank you for holding him up. Thank you. He loved you and was devoted to you - he shared that with us - his students. Can you imagine how impressionable that was on us?

My condolences to the family. Walter was a very important person in my life as a child and as an adult. As a young child, he invited me go on stage with him at school to turn the pages when he was performing on the piano. It wasn't until many years later that I realized, he didn't really need any help. He was just being kind to a little girl who also dreamed of becoming a musician. In later life, when I doubted my ability as a musician and steel band Director, Walter said, "You don't have to be the best to be great." Those words have stuck with me. I learned to play steel pan because of Walter and because of Walter, I've taught several other children and adults to play steel pan in Calgary, Barbados and Saint John. Walter gave many of us the gift of music, as well as many performance experiences that none of us children in his band would ever have hoped to experience. I will be forever grateful.

My memories of him are many but the trip to Montreal for the Olympics' in 1976 was amazing, recording the album in Montreal and then travelling across Canada in 1979. Priceless memories due to his ability to dream something and then do it. Wow. He will be missed. Hugs to you all.

Dear Suzanne & Family,
We were very shocked and saddened to learn of Walter's passing from a friend yesterday. We extend our heartfelt sympathies and condolences for your loss. Walter and I shared many happy memories. We both served on the Bi-Capitol Project, which ultimately realized the Imperial Theatre. In 1983 Walter recruited me to become involved with the Cultural component of the 1985 Canada Summer Games, and the two of us worked hard to create Festival by the Sea. Those were wonderful days. We put Saint John on the map with probably the only festival in Atlantic Canada that had a one-hour television special shown throughout Canada on CTV Network. This happened for another four years in a row.
Walter was a goof friend and would often visit my office when he was a member of Common Council. He provided sage advice and was one of my strongest supporters. I am grateful that we kept in touch over the years. He had a positive influence of so many lives through his teachings in music, his direction of the Steel Band and the Rotary Boys Choir, his woodworking creations of rocking horses and other animals, his piano repertoire, and his administrative skills. But most of all we could se he loved his family.
Elizabeth and I send our love, support, thoughts, and prayers to the entire Ball and Cadell family as you reflect on his life and many contributions.
Most sincerely,
Bernie & Elizabeth
