Obituary of Richard Herbert Blenkhorn
It is with profound grief and sadness that I announce Richard’s passing in the palliative care unit of the Saint John Regional Hospital on Friday, December 22nd, 2023.
Born in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia on November 23rd, 1941, to Rhoda (Phinney) Blenkhorn and Herbert Blenkhorn, he was the oldest of eleven children.
Richard leaves behind his loving life partner Sheila Mockler; his son, Justin Blenkhorn; granddaughter, Khloe Blenkhorn and Juanita Hardy, Tyler and three grand sons, Mathis, Samuel and William.
At the age of 18, Richard left home to begin a career with the Saint John Tug Boat company as a deck hand. He had a love of the sea and travelled the world. He also had a strong work ethic and a keen sense of learning. During his time on the tugs he earned the designation of Marine Engineer.
In 1973, Richard began his second career as a building mechanic at NBTEL where he spent the next 37 years, retiring in March of 2010. He was a mentor to many in his both his work and personal life.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. He had many memorable hunting trips through the years and whether the hunt was successful or not, there were always many stories to be told.
After retirement he enjoyed being home, working on his many projects and puttering in the barn.
Thank you to the amazing team of doctors and nurses in the palliative care unit, for the care and compassion we were given during his brief stay. I would also like to extend sincere gratitude to the many friends and neighbours who have reached out during this very difficult time. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
