My condolences to Mr Greig’s Family . He was my teacher at River Valley and we joked how when I went to harbour View he followed lol
He was the most amazing teacher and person . Understanding and he made history and school for me enjoyable! I am
Now 43 years old and STILL remember parts of History because of his amazing teaching . He was compassionate and truly an amazing man . And I’ve thought of him throughout the years even re connecting via email in 2011 . And he remembered me .I apologize for the lateness of my comment and memory I hope it doesn’t cause discomfort but a smile as I’m sure there are 1000’s of his student whom
He had an immense positive impact on .
Rest in peace Mr Greig

Sincerest apologies for taking so long to include my condolences to Brian's friends and family. My wife and I were travelling through New Zealand when I received notification of Brian's passing. Since then, although I have sat down at the computer a number of times and tried to put into words the sense of loss at the passing of my dear friend "Griegsy", I could not truly express my grief and sorrow.
Geographically, Brian and I have been very far apart ever since 1973 when I moved from New Brunswick to British Columbia, then onward to Australia in 2003. I contacted Brian whenever I visited Saint John and we always made it a point to meet for lunch at one of the remaining cafe's or restaurants where we dined all those many years ago. We also kept in close touch via e-mail, sometimes exchanging messages several times per week. Occasionally, the lapses between our messages extended to weeks or even months, but we always picked up right where we left off.
I did not work with Brian during his long career as an educator, but I have been pleased to read of the many warm and heartfelt thoughts that others have shared.
Brian and I met up as teenagers in the 1960's, spending our summers at Ragged Point and, together with Harry Seaman, Sandy Kincaid and Charley Middleton we forged an inseparable bond much like the young actors in those classic movies "Stand By Me" and "Summer of 1942". For a number of years, we were almost neighbours as Brian lived on Fourth Street and I lived only a couple of blocks away on Cranston Avenue.
Brian and I shared with each other some of our personal and health struggles as we both transitioned into our senior years. I will miss our long e-mail exchanges.
Of the many, many memories that I can recall, one of my favourites goes back to our final years in High School. It might point out that Brian was born to be a teacher. It was 1965 and we were both in grade 12, although at different high schools...he attended St. Malachy's while I went to Voc (now Harbour View). I was failing miserably and it was obvious that I was going to have to repeat my final year. I had failed most of my final exams and my only hope was to do the best I could on the provincial matriculation tests. I coerced Brian to coax me on Geometry and the day before that subject was due to be tested, he and I went through our geometry text from start to finish, memorizing each theorem and corollary from beginning to end. The next day, I sweated my way through the 'matric' and managed to score a "C" on the paper. If I remember correctly, Brian got up after 20 minutes and threw his test paper in the trash and walked out!!! As it turned out, that was the only subject that I passed but I was happy as could be because it meant that I did not have to study geometry again when I repeated Grade 12 the following year!
I'll never forget you, my friend.

I just heard of Brian’s passing, today. My condolences to his family. I only taught with Brian for a year at RVMS before he went to Harbour View but we had a lot of laughs and good memories and when he moved, I inherited his classroom! I always let him know when he had toothpaste in the corners of his mouth. So that became part of our daily greeting. Brian was a valued resource when it came to the NBTA. He knew the ins and outs and willingly shared his knowledge. You could always count on Brian to know what to do or who to talk to. I was happy to read in his obituary about his grandchildren and his active life. I always checked the Seniority List, where Brian held the top spot for years! All the best to you.

I am so sorry to hear of Brian's passing and extend my deepest sympathy to Sheila and the family.
Brian’s devotion to education was extraordinary. I was privileged to have him for grades 8 and 9 homeroom, English and history at River Valley, and then to know him as a colleague briefly at Harbour View and finally through the SJ branch of the Retired Teachers' Association. He was a gifted and dedicated educator, sometimes unorthodox and always effective. I remember many of his favourite sayings and used some of them in my own teaching; one that always made my students laugh was his comment on the age of sail: “If the wind don’t blow, the boat don’t go!”
With fond memories,
Susanne Sutton

Unlike my son who had him at HVHS and has a huge love for history ! My brother had him at Inglewood school . So I joked with him at HVHS that he was still teaching !! He truly was a dedicated teacher who touched many lives and for that I am so thankful. Cindy ( Tippett ) Maguire

So sorry to hear about Mr. Greig. He was my homeroom teacher in grade 7 and 9. I remember my first day in grade 7, he recognized my last name (Oliver) and we figured out that he taught some of my siblings at Inglewood. From that day on, we got along very well. He was definitely one of my favorite teachers, even though he made me stick gum to my nose and walk around the hallway at River Valley. RIP Mr. Greig!!!!

In my second year of teaching I met the force of Nature that was Brian Greig, in fact he was in the office at RVMS when I received my B contract (not that that matters) . I met him again when I went to work at HVHS in year 5. I was so impressed both times to be in the presence of THE MAN. He was revered everywhere he taught, a teaching professionalism Mecca and all-around nice fella who genuinely cared about his coworkers. I am so sorry to read of his passing. Condolences to the family- from me (Kim), dad (Fred) and Mum (Barb). We will miss him too. Hugs.

I was fortunate to meet Brian as a school rep in the NBTA branch 20. We worked together on various committees and became fast friends. He was an incredible man, devoted teacher, basketball coach and mentor to so many. Brian loved his kids!. Each time we got together we began by exchanging updates on what was happening with our kids. He also taught mine, one at River Valley and one at Harbour View. Both boys enjoyed his approach, inspiring methods but above all his compassion and humour. Brian was one of those people you meet in your life who you never forget. I offer you all my very deepest condolences and hope the messages you receive bring you comfort, knowing how special your dad and grampy was to so many people during his life. May God bless you all.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Mr. Greig, both as a student in his Grade 7 & 9 English class at River Valley, as well as in my earlier years as a colleague and NBTA representative for the local branch.
As a student, I'll remember Mr. Greig for his unique, flashy ties and the countless overheads he used on his overhead projector over the years. He was an excellent educator and truly crafted the art of getting students to produce a first rate book report. My time at River Valley in the mid 1990's are still years that I look fondly back upon, especially knowing that the collaboration amongst all staff at that time, including my father, was second to none. Mr. Greig was certainly part of that atmosphere during this time.
As a colleague, I witnessed first hand his devotion to the teaching profession by being an active advocate for the NBTA in a number of roles over a very lengthy and fulfilling career.
On behalf of my parents, Joe and Donna, as well as my older brother, Shaun, I wish to extend my condolences to the Greig family on your loss. Mr. Greig will certainly be missed by many lives he influenced over the course of his teaching career.

Mr Grieg was my home room teacher in grade 7 River Valley. I failed a test miserably and forged my father’s signature. He contacted my parents and handled the situation so well that I never tried that again and I still had respect for him. His relentless requirement for perfection on book reports not only taught proper English but also attention to detail. When my children went to high school I was so pleased to see him still teaching and they were lucky enough to experience his teaching. RIP Mr Greig

To Mr Greig's family. I am deeply sorry for your guys loss. Mr. Greig was such a sweet guy and full of jokes. He taught me Grade 9 History in 2001-2002 at HVHS. He made class very interesting for a naive teenager like myself (at the time) with his stories he shared (history related). Last time I saw Mr. Greig was in 2016 when I showed him a recent picture that I've had done of my family. I remember his face lit up. Talk about life in the middle of a Walmart aisle while blocking traffic. He'll be truly missed by everyone.
