Obituary of Lillian Fortune
It is with great sadness the family of Mary Lillian (Gordon) Fortune announce her peaceful passing at Tucker Hall, Shannex surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, May 8 th , 2024.
Born on January 6, 1930 in Bathurst, NB, Lillian was the eldest of six children. The family moved to Saint John when she was a child, where she lived the rest of her years. As a teenager, Lillian left school to work at Simms Brush Factory to help support the family. At nineteen, she married John Edward Fortune and went on to have six children, whom they raised in the Milford Area. She later returned to work at Centrecare until her retirement.
Lillian had a huge personality packaged up in a small, but unbelievably strong, body. She could be seen out on her daily walks on the West Side, with a ready smile and a wave. She loved to watch “her stories” in the afternoon. Once her grandchildren started to come along, they would arrive for visits, eager for one of Nanny Lilly’s famous baked treats. Her huge heart and willingness to help her family and friends left a lasting impression on those around her.
Predeceased by her husband, John Edward Fortune, parents, Gabriel and Melvina (Cormier) Gordon, infant sister, Pearl, brothers Mike (Janet), George, and Gerald, and two of her sons, John Edward “Jack” (Pamela), and Sean Bernard, and her good friend Jack Stevens, she will be missed by those she leaves behind. Lillian is survived her sister, Rita, her children, Carol Fortune, Dave Fortune, Richard (Nicole) Fortune, Cathy (Dave) Fortune; grandchildren Angela (Jim) Campbell, Sarah (Seth) Campbell, Jack (Ammie) Fortune, Kris (Erin) Fortune, Sandy (Seungmin) Fortune, Wayne (Elyse) Fortune, Scott Fortune, Amanda (Tommy) Fortune and Stephen (Kaylee) Fortune; great-grandchildren Gabe Campbell, Calvin McCaffrey, Ash McCaffrey, Zoe Campbell, Quinn McNamara, Lukas Fortune, Haydee Fortune, Emmy-Lou Fortune, Daphne Fortune and Hardy Lutz, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 from 6-8pm. A mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Rose of Lima Church on Thursday, May 16 th at 11:30am. Reception to follow. A private family internment will occur at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name would be appreciated to New Brunswick Social Pediatrics or the Imperial Theatre in Saint John.
