After many years of not having contact with your father ,I noticed that he had died! He was lucky to have lived the life that he had and enjoyed as it was one of privilege. I remember your father when Arthur and his son Ken happen to be at the home of Irving Oil the Golden Ball location right downtown.
I had lost my wallet at the beach in Saint John and I had only my check book with one check left in my car ! The car I was driving was a red 1972 cougar and in order to get back to Hamilton Ontario my goal was to be able to have enough gas to get back. I knew who Arthur was but at that time I did not want to disturb him personally on this matter!
But because the local Irving stations would not accept an out of town check especially taking into account I did not have any identification of any sort , I approached the home of Irving Oil on a Sunday morning close to 40 years ago! And in the parking lot was a blue Volkswagen bug convertible ,I had found my man I thought to myself !
And this is what transpired! I was greeted by a military like receptionist resembling an almost miss Doubtfire type image. I was really quite intimidated , she seemed to have a real interesting personal precence to some degree as she was working there for the sole purpose of working the front desk on a Sunday.
I asked if I could see Arthur ! She asked me if I had an appointment? No,I replied ! She replied that unless I was the head of a state ,or I had a prior appointment the chances were not good and on most occasions would need to set an appointment if I wanted to see him many weeks and months in advance” But then she asked my who I was ? I stated I was a costumer! And my name is Edward Graydon. One moment please ! I will call up stairs and ask him if he will see you?
Arthur ! There is a customer downstairs in the lobby named Edward Graydon who would like to see you? Edward Graydon! Who is he ? A customer sir! A costumer? Send him up!
The doors behind the receptionist opened up and I was met by a security guard who took me to Arthurs office! Arthur was wearing a Ducks unlimited Jacket and his son Ken was also present at the time.
My goal was to ask Arthur to cash an out of town and province check by providing gift certificates that could be used on my way back to Hamilton . And because Arthur being the only one that could make that decision fate introduced me to your father ,Arthur Irving and the rest is history but a history and a time in my life that intertwined briefly.
When I look at videos of historical Canadian history of Arthur , rumours that he was a true salesman are not over stated.
Thank so much Arthur for cashing my out of town and province check !
It was a pleasure to have done business with you I really enjoyed the interaction.
A happy custumer
PS
I lost the original copy of the check that was processed through your personal bank account ,I saved it for many years as a token of remembrance of my interaction with you, it gained a great deal of attention within certain business leaders in Ontario when I got back home ! Many people where really quite impressed with what transpired .
You live on by way of personal interactions with people you have meet over the years .

I shared elsewhere on this site my deep appreciation for Arthur Irving's many kindnesses to me personally while I served as the president of the Acadia Divinity College (ADC) and also on the Board of Governors at Acadia University from 1999-2007. As with so many others, he was always so kind to me and always interested in what was going on at the Divinity College. On one occasion he and Sandra and I walked by the ADC going to the Dining Room and he stopped in front of the college and explained to his wife that I was its president and he spoke so well of the divinity college's presence at Acadia University. I was especially delighted when he came to my retirement dinner and also spoke to the many who came to it and making comments about my and the divinity college. At my last graduation at AU, he came to me to express his appreciation for my service on campus and a year after I left he sent me a gracious email asking how I was doing. I only have words of admiration for all he did for the university and the people who learned and served at AU. I do offer my condolences to his family, some of whom I met during my tenure in the Baptist churches and elsewhere in the Maritimes. I will always remember his warm smile, many hand shakes, generosity, and love for AU. —Lee Martin McDonald

Please know that you are in my thoughts during these difficult days. I will forever be grateful to Mr. Irving and your family for the incredible impact you have had on my life as a student and as I start my career. I cherish all the memories over the years of the Arthur L. Irving Scholar lunches, your visits to Acadia University, and last spring's Arthur L. Sincere condolences to the Irving family. Arthur's 'down to earth' practical insights, his continued appreciation for hard work and his keen interest in Irish education and support for families & staff of Scoil Íosagáin, Aghada N.S., Ireland, despite his business workload and success was an inspiration to all. His friendly demeanour coupled with his sharp intellect made for engaging conversation whenever he visited our parish. His undoubted love of family, loyalty and his continued productive active working years, extending into his tenth decade, was, and is, an example to all. From the brief encounters I had with him, I believe, he was a pragmatist and if he believed a job needed doing then he didn't stand on ceremony! He wasn't afraid to roll up his sleeves, get involved and he expected those around him to do likewise - a true leader!
Even though his life spanned almost 94 years I know his family, and those close to him, would have wanted more time with him. May his family, friends and work colleagues find comfort at this time. His philanthropic support to the families and staff of Scoil Íosagáin, Aghada N.S. Ireland nad his genuine kindness is great appreciated.
"Ní bheidh a leithéid ann arís. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis".( translates from Irish: "His likes won't be seen again. God have mercy on his soul")

My sincere condolences to Sandra and the extended Irving family. I was a Professor of Environmental Science during Arthur’s time as Chancellor at Acadia and was fortunate to have my office in the extraordinary Irving Centre. I was very fond of Arthur and appreciated his genuine interest in students and what they were doing. One particular memory I will treasure forever and have repeated his words many times to students and others. At his first Convocation as Chancellor he rose to make his comments and ignoring the podium walked to the very edge of the platform and directly addressed the graduating class. “When you leave Acadia, go out into the world and start jobs and careers, I want you to remember one thing. If you’re not passionate about what you’re doing, QUIT” (Gasps from students, parents and I fear many of my colleagues). Without passion for what you are doing, you’re no good to your employer and no good to yourself. Keep looking until you find what you’re passionate about and do that.” What wonderful advice. Thank you Arthur.

In the early days of his chancellorship at Acadia University, I first met Arthur —a moment that remains vivid in my memory. He arrived with Sandra and a young Sarah, rolled up his sleeves and got to work. His question, “What can we do to help Acadia?” has resonated with me ever since.
As a fierce ambassador for the university, Arthur’s stories and leadership lessons were inspiring. I was fortunate to interview him and share his insights, which have been instrumental in shaping Acadia’s path to excellence. His dedication was contagious, and his actions spoke louder than words, striving to make Acadia a better place for everyone.
My heartfelt condolences go out to Sandra, Sarah, the entire Irving family, and Arthur’s friends and colleagues, who were like family to him. Arthur’s legacy at Acadia is not just built on his generous contributions but also on the personal connections he forged and the lives he enriched. His presence will be profoundly missed, but his leadership and the memories of his unwavering support will continue to guide us.

Arthur once told me you can tell a lot about someone by how they treat their dog. Not many people understand that, and it was a privilege to hear it from him.
Through his generosity and yours, we have been able to train hundreds of veterinarians and in turn help thousands upon thousands of animals in need, belonging to people from every walk of life: rural and urban, rich and poor, young and old. I was so sad when I received the news of your loss, which truly is a loss for all of Atlantic Canada. I remember when I lost my father, and years later my wife, all the support Arthur gave me. His strength helped me through these difficult times. We are all here now to support the Irving family during your difficult times.
I know 93 years is a wonderful long life and we all should celebrate this but I am sure going to miss him. Thanks for all the wonderful memories Arthur. There will never be another

Dear Sandra: The papers will write about Arthur's business successes but perhaps his greatest gift was his love for people. I remember as a child in the 1950s wearing my clothes to bed in the winter to keep warm as the house was so cold. No fuel and single paned windows made life hard. But the Irving family has been providing fuel to the marginalized for years and for that and all the other beautiful things you and Sarah and Arthur have done, may the Lord truly walk this road with you in comfort and strength. Much love. Alice and Brian Hughes, Saint John

I started out working for irving oil in 1995,held a few positions within the company, by far and hands down the best employer I ever worked for, I met Mr. Irving at the refinery ,I was a gas tech and they took us from sydney to the customer contact center, to the refinery, to the lube plant just after the hydrocracker was installed. A firm handshake he had ,nervous I was , all that went away in seconds after a conversation his first words to me was while shaking my hand was how is irving oil treating you , I said very well I learn lots and love my job ,as quick as he asked me that he followed up with " how are you treating irving oil" wasn't expecting that and he seen I was nervous and told me I was doing a good Job, I loved my time at irving oil and they treated me well, I gave 100% like most did and was rewarded well. I am deeply saddened to hear of Mr.Irvings passing ,my deepest, sincerest condolences to all his family, the world lost a pioneer, they don't build them like the Irvings anymore.

Sandra, Sarah and family; so sad to hear of Arthur's passing. Just a lovely man. I remember working at your house and a house keeper back at the time of the Refinery Strike. I don't remember the year. Sarah, I think was only 9 yrs.old. I did laundry, ironed shirts, made cookies and other things. I loved it there. Many fond memories there for sure. My husband worked at the refinery many times as a pipefitter. He now has passed on, now 3 yrs ago. Mr Irving is now at peace and with no more pain. I know Sandra what you went through with his Cancer. I was with my husband as well, he had lung and thyroid cancer. Very hard watching them fade away and in pain. May your days be stronger and peaceful. Hugs .God Bless

Such sad news. Mr. Irving's passing leaves a huge void in the affairs of our City. Its true that he never forgot a name, always seemed to know what you were up to, and never hesitated to thank everyone for their efforts or business. When " Thanks For The Business" was first published, I called the house hoping to have Mr. Irving sign my copy. He answered the phone personally, and very quickly offered to send over a fresh copy, personally signed. That's the man he was; friendly, gracious and a true gentleman. My deepest condolences to Sandra, Sarah, Jennifer,Kenneth, Arthur and the entire family.
