Obituary of **UPDATED** Lois Gertrude Baxter
It is with much sadness that the family of Lois Gertrude Baxter, wife of the late James Gerald Baxter announce her passing. Lois lived a long, full life and passed away peacefully at Bobby’s Hospice on July 19th, 2024 with her cherished loved ones at her side.
Lois was born to Hazel (Burns, Stevens) and Guy McCullough on July 7, 1932. She has been predeceased by all of the siblings from the Stevens family: George, John, Leonard, Marian (Downing), and Jean; and of the McCullough family: Orville and Doreen (Campbell). Following her father’s death, she and Doreen were adopted by Leslie Codner and his wife in 1940, and raised in Ketepec, NB. Upon the death of her sister, Doreen, in 1960, she took on the responsibility of raising her niece and nephew, Faye and Lee, in the very same Ketepec home.
She and Gerry married in 1968, and spent the next 40 years creating a wonderful life together. They enjoyed many cruises and overseas trips as well as annual trips to Florida, but her mostfavourite place was at “The Cottage” on New River Beach, where she and Gerry hosted their family and friends over the decades.
Lois was proud of her career as a legal secretary to Andrew G. Harrigan, QC. She worked with him in private practice for ten years, then followed him to the Crown Prosecutor’s Office and Provincial Court where she served for twenty-four years, retiring in 1990. Judges James McNamee, Bill McCarrol, and Pat Cummings were equally special to Lois.
Lois served as President of the Carleton Curling Club- Day Ladies Association, and the Good Time Bowling League. She was an avid walker throughout her 80s, making daily treks from her cottage to Pocologan’s Bay Breeze Restaurant all summer long. She was a skilled Cribbage player, having been part of a weekly group for 32 years.
She was the last surviving member of her family. As well as her husband, Gerry, she was pre-deceased by her much-loved nephew, D. Lee Campbell.
She is survived by her niece, L. Faye Johnson (Tom Begin); Lee’s widow, Donna Campbell; Faye’s children: Michael Johnson, Scott Johnson, Kimberly White (Martin), and the children who called her “Nanny Lo”: Cameron and Madeleine White, and Kai and Emilia Johnson. She is also survived by Lee’s children: James Campbell (Fong) and their son Sebastian, and Brittany Campbell (Garret Hull) and their daughters, Nova and Nikita. She was also blessed with a special niece, Bonnie Downing.
Her family is forever grateful to all of the kind people who shared in her care in these past weeks. We especially appreciate Extra Mural Nurses Pat and Carol and the extraordinary staff at Bobby’s Hospice.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424). A time of visitation will be held on August 15, 2024, from 12 noon until 2 pm, at which time the Celebration of Life service will begin in Brenan's Chapel, followed by a reception. Interment will take place at a later date.
For those who wish, remembrances to Bobby’s Hospice would be appreciated by the family. Please place online condolences and remembrances at www.BrenansFH.com.
