Obituary of Donna Christine (nee Tyler) Johnston
Died August 7, 2024, in her 87th year with her husband steadily by her side. Born at home at Pine Street in Devon where she spent her early years, before moving to Saint John and Bridge Street attending Alexandra, Princess Elizabeth and Saint John High Schools, graduating in 1955. Shortly after achieving Teachers College certification began a career at District 20 Crescent Valley School, married Melbourne L. Johnston in 1958. Donna was proud of receiving a BT ED (80') & BEd (85') UNB late into a teaching career that lasted 34 years, all in grade 2. Donna loved her students as well as the summers off. Blessed with good friends and neighbours where she lived in Millidgeville and cottage at Hill's Point. With Mel, Donna had an amazing social life. She had many group and social memberships through the years. There were many late nights and lots of travel.
Donna was predeceased by her parents Clara and Frank Hamilton, brother John and birth father Pilot Officer (RAF) George Holyoke. Donna met a sister Pauline Harrison from Grantham, England later in life.
Donna leaves her husband Mel of 66 years, son Marc (Susan), granddaughters Kara Lister (Ryan), Laura Johnston (Aldin Pezerovic), great granddaughter Nora Lister, a light that shone so bright for Donna during this past year.
In keeping with Donna's wish, there will be no visitation. A private memorial and interment will be held at a later date. Our family expresses deep gratitude to the staff and employees of Shannex and Compass Group from Tucker Hall. The incredible support, respect and love that's been shared has helped ease our pain for this leg of Mom's journey. A sincere thank you to Karen Belyea and Brenan’s for their help.
For those who wish, donations can be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund (www.legion.ca/remembrance/the-poppy-campaign/funding-for-organizations). Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan's Funeral Home (506-634-7424). Online condolences may be placed at www.BrenanFH.com.
