Obituary of Micheline Anita MacDonald
Micheline Anita MacDonald (nee Gadbois) passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024, at Turnbull Nursing Home in Saint John, NB, with her devoted husband, Walter, of 62 years by her side. Born in Montreal, Quebec, on March 20, 1928, Micheline studied nursing at Montreal General Hospital and served as a health care provider.
Micheline married Walter in 1962, and they spent most of their married life in Walter’s family home in Welsford, NB. Over the years, they thoughtfully renovated the house, collected and restored antiques, curated art, and cultivated beautiful gardens on their property. In 1963, they welcomed their only child, Ian Scott. Micheline was a stay-at-home mom, a school volunteer, and a cub leader who, along with Walter, instilled strong values and skills in Ian, laying a solid foundation for his future and he ultimately earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from UNB Fredericton.
.
Tragically, just weeks after graduation, Ian died at the age of 22 as the result of an accident. Following this loss, Micheline displayed unwavering resilience, drawing strength, and support from Walter. Together, they found purpose in honoring Ian’s memory by supporting the construction of a climbing wall at the University of New Brunswick and quietly helping vulnerable young men in need. Micheline dedicated many hours to Hospice Saint John, calling grieving parents to provide support and comfort during their most difficult times.
Fluently bilingual, well-read, and a lover of the arts and classical music, Micheline traveled the world and, in her later years, wrote and published three books. Known for her candid nature and ability to express herself honestly, she effectively communicated her needs and stood as a strong advocate for herself and others.
In 1999, Micheline and Walter moved to Brentwood Towers in Saint John, NB. One of Micheline’s greatest joys was when her sister, Denise, from Virginia, bought a condo in the same building, allowing them to share 22 summers.
Micheline was predeceased by her son, Ian MacDonald. She is survived by her husband, Walter MacDonald of Saint John, NB; her sister, Denise D’Aoust of Virginia; her half-brother, Ian Gadbois of Ottawa; her nieces Andrea D’Aoust and Cindy (D’Aoust) and John Hinton, Virginia; as well as special nieces and nephews and the Campbell cousins. She also leaves behind dear friends Anne Marie and Rick Robichaud, and Terry Comeau.
Family and friends would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Turnbull Nursing Home for the wonderful care provided to Micheline.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB, (506-634-7424). Interment will take place in Welsford Cemetery at a later date.
