Obituary of Sheila Croteau
With broken hearts, the family announce the unexpected passing of Sheila Cecilia Croteau in a house fire in Rothesay, NB, in the early hours of Sunday, April 5, 2020. Born November 14, 1953 in the Prairies, she was a biological daughter of Mary Louise Cardinal, and adopted daughter of Jean Turchin.
Sheila was a pillar of the South End, and known as “Mama She” to many of the neighbourhood children. She was instrumental in her children’s upbringing, volunteering her time to all of their activities, including Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts. She brought aboriginal awareness to her church, St. Andrew and St. David, where she worked for nearly 30 years, and she also educated inmates at the Old Black River Road Jail. She was a former Chief, and current Elder, and has a plaque at the Cherry Brook Zoo that was dedicated in her honour for drumming work and spiritual awareness she provided. She did so much for so many people, and will be missed by everyone that had the honour of knowing her.
Sheila was predeceased by her husband, Robert Parlee. She is survived by her daughter, Amanda Murphy; her son, Ross MacKay; and her grandchildren: Josiah, Mark, Peyton, Paxton, Kal-el, and Evangeline Bean; and many friends.
Arrangements are under the care of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424). Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, a Celebration of Sheila’s Life will be held at a later date. Many friends and family have asked how they can help cover the cost of Sheila’s funeral expenses. You can do so by sending a cheque to the funeral home, addressed to Brenan’s Funeral Home with Sheila’s name in the memo. E-transfers may be sent directly to Jennifer Mitton at jenniferl.mitton@gmail.com .The community’s willingness to help is greatly appreciated by the family.
