Obituary of Edward Arthur Shuve

Edward A. (Ted) Shuve
June 12, 1933 – April 10, 2020

The last surviving member of his immediate family, Ted was the youngest of 10 children, born to the late John and Margaret (Moore) Shuve.  He died unexpectedly but peacefully on April 10, 2020, with the loving support of the overnight team at Ridgewood Veterans Wing.

Dad enjoyed life to the fullest and was always looking for opportunities to learn and do new things.  He served in the Canadian Reserve Forces from 1950-53 and enjoyed the benefits of his service to our country in recent years. Dad owned and operated numerous business ventures including Century Steel & Boiler Company, ran a Country Store in Harvey, NB, and installed swimming pools to just highlight a few of his business endeavours.  Later in life he attended summer school at UNB Fredericton and taught steel fabrication at NBCC. He was a Commissionaire and enjoyed working at Base Gagetown.  He delivered morning newspapers in his late seventies – it was his way to stay active.  He volunteered with the Saint John Community Food Bank, was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a Luxor Shriner.  He was on the Board of the Westfield Golf & Country Club in the 70’s and enjoyed curling, golf and fishing in his spare time. 

He liked to be on the move and so not surprising he was planning future West side excursions on his recently acquired electric wheelchair – he had places to go and people to see!  Dad thoroughly enjoyed many overseas trips to Norway and re-connecting with extended family.  Closer to home, Mom and Dad, enjoyed summers at Magaguadavic Lake and the summer home in Westfield, eventually enjoying year-round homes in both locations.  Travelling with friends to Florida for a winter break were also times of great enjoyment for Mom and Dad.  Ted proudly grew up in the South End (Queen Street) and enjoyed rekindling friendships from his youth in more recent years.  During his time at Ridgewood Veterans Wing, he enjoyed meeting and talking with the veterans, often finding a common thread where paths had crossed in earlier years.  He knew he was privileged to be at Ridgewood and thought the world of the nurses and staff who made the challenges of daily living worthwhile.  While the last few weeks at Ridgewood were quieter than usual due to Covid-19 isolation from family and friends, the kindness of staff to get him out in his new wheels for a “whirl” in the fresh Spring air was much appreciated – thank you!  Uncle Ted was a favourite among his many nieces and nephews and he cherished their visits and the family get-togethers held in recent years. 

Ted is survived by his son, David (Becky) of Magaguadavic Lake, his daughter, Heather of Westfield and his two grandchildren, Christine Wright (Frank Devine) of Oromocto and Dr. Alexander Wright of Adelaide, Australia as well as many nieces and nephews.  Dad is also survived by special friend, Hughleen Long, who brought much joy and friendship to Dad’s life in the past few years.  Ted was pre-deceased by his wife, Avis (Peggy), in 2017 and sisters Anna Shuve, Kay Buckland, Hilda Holyoke, Jean Cooke, Evelyn Kyle, and brothers Walter, Alfred, John “Jack” and Ainslie Shuve.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home. Due to restrictions on gatherings, a celebration of Ted’s life will be held at a later date.  For those who wish, remembrances would be appreciated to the Ridgewood Veterans Wing (Bus Fund) or the Saint John Community Food Basket.
