I was so saddened to hear of Doug's passing. We grew up together on Kennedy Street and Kennedy Place. I lived, growing up, next to the Hickman Famly at the top of Kennedy Place, right next door to Harold and (Nettie) Hickman. We sure go back a lotta years. My heart goes out to the Hickman Family. You are in my thoughts, along with the memories I shared with them. Be careful. Be safe. Stay Healthy. - Sterling Moore

I'm saddened to hear of Doug's passing. Doug was an unusually affable, and genuine fellow. I found him many times in animated conversation with my mother, Ethel, when he visited, looking over and discussing, pictures, and memorabilia, of the sailing ships owned, and mastered by my late grandfather ( Capt. C.S. Richards ). Doug's love of the sea couldn't have been more evident than I witnessed on those visits. Sincere condolences to Doug's family.

We are so shocked and saddened of the passing of such a wonderful man. He had a gift for story telling and we always enjoyed any visit or chance meeting we had with Doug. His laughter and smiles will always remain in our memories. Paula was a childhood friend from the North End and always cherished their friendship. Gone too soon. Sail on Doug.

Claire, Brian and families, I am heartbroken to hear about Doug. He was a gem - always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. I enjoyed many a lunch hour with Doug, Brian and the guys at the (then) Portland Pub. I also remember when he got Black Sea. He loved that boat so much and proudly showed us around when he was docked in Digby on the weekend of the Digby race from SJ. Doug always called me "Jeanie." One day, someone corrected him, but I quickly reassured him that I wanted him to continue to call me Jeanie, because it made me feel special. To Doug's family, I hope that Doug's warm spirit surrounds you and comforts you, and that your memories of this wonderful human buoy you and fill your hearts with joy. To Doug, may the seas you travel now be calm, the skies blue and the winds fresh and fair and true.

To all of Doug Hickman's family, our sincere condolences on his loss. He was a wonderful friend whose time has come to an end far too soon. We have great memories of him coming to the house to repair many plumbing disasters and working with a very junior assistant, our then 4 or 5 year old son. They became buddies and Doug would take our son out on his appointed rounds and returning to us a little boy whose day was filled with fantastic adventures about where he went with Doug and what he did with Doug and just overflowing with elation of having a big guy for a friend. Doug was wonderful with kids both his own and others. Those of us who had the privilege of knowing him, know there will never be another like him. Doug may your travels in the hereafter always have fair winds and may they come from the back. Rest well Friend. Teri and Ellis Levine.

My sincere condolences to the Hickman family. I first met the family over 60 years ago when grandfather took the calls. To the Hickman family,
Please accept our sincere condolences on the passing of Doug. We were deeply saddened to learn this shocking news. Doug, and his father before him, have always been our plumber. After his work was through, he always took the time to sit at the kitchen table and talk about his family and his latest boating experiences. He was truly a good storyteller and genuinely sincere person. May the family be comforted by the mark of friendship and laughter he left on his customers, and may Doug rest in peace.
In sympathy,

Life becomes busy, and sometimes we think it will last forever or don't give it a thought that the people we meet and greet everyday who charge your batteries and bring a smile on your face will be gone, forever the next day or within moments.. Doug Hickman was one of those individuals who charged our batteries of hope, joy, wisdom and most of all by his great stories. The first time I met Doug nineteen years ago at the Saint John Power Boat Club, he preceded to tell me a story of the Hickman legacy and its origins from Newfoundland. Doug was proud of his lineage, his family and his connection to the water. Doug's significant friendships at the Power Boat Club highlighted the type of character Doug was being in this world. Doug was a fixture at the Club and a huge wealth of information not only around the water but happenings around Saint John. Interesting that his love of the water and sailing dove tailed with his profession as a plumber! Doug had water in his blood one way or another...LOL...
Our condolences with deep affection are extended to you Claire, Josh and Greg. Brian and your family, and the Power Boat Club family. I feel the Creator called him on that beautiful summer day on his beloved Black Sea on the water where his heart always wanted to be. I believe Doug just like his sailing style was always ready.
