Obituary of Doug Hickman

It is with much shock and sadness that the family of Douglas “Doug” Hickman of Saint John, cherished husband of Claire (Phillips) Hickman, announce his untimely passing which occurred on Saturday, July 29, 2023 while doing what he enjoyed the most, sailing on his boat, Black Sea.  Born in Saint John on May 13, 1952, he was the son of Shirley Scott and the late Don Hickman.

Together with his brother, Brian, Doug owned and operated H. H. Hickman & Sons for the past 40 years.  Doug’s passion in life was for sailing and throughout his lifetime he made many trips in Atlantic and Caribbean waters and experienced several adventures along the way.  Doug was a member of the Saint John Power Boat Club, the Nova Scotia Schooner Association, NB Lodge #22 and the Cruising Club of America.  He will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife, Claire and mother, Shirley, Doug will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Greg (Katrina) and Josh; brother, Brian (Anna); sister-in-law, Joan Cosman (Stewart); nieces and nephews, Jennifer McFadden, Derek Cosman (Stacey), Mark Cosman (Malissa), Meredith Ozen (Evren), Lindsay Stewart (Ryan) and Amy Evans; many great-nieces and great-nephews; special friends, Scott and Sandy Piekarski and Ernest Hamilton; as well as his beloved canine companion, Nova and many friends.

A Celebration of Doug’s Life will take place at the Saint John Power Boat Club, 100 Kennedy Street, Saint John on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 from 3:00 -7:00 PM.  Arrangements are under the care and direction of Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (506-634-7424).
